Free YouTube recording/editing software?

My OS is Windows 8.1

 

I want to start a YouTube channel to create a database of funny clips I recorded so I can watch them back when I feel like doing so.

 

Some suggested Windows Movie Maker and Lightworks for editing.

No clear option for recording software.

I also need something to make my thumbnails with (MS paint won't do).

 

Recommended recording software?

Recommended paint software?

 

They have to be completely free as I'm not willing/going to pay software for now (obviously pirating is a big NO NO).

paint.net is free photoshop lite.

For recording software there is OBS, which is a free and better version of xplit, so you can also stream your gameplay if you wanted to.

Recommended recording software?

OBS or Shaddowplay. I would personally recommend against Shaddowplay, as it is only compatible with Nvidia cards, and should you ever upgrade to an AMD card, you loose the ability to reliably record your gameplay (amd has a competitor, but it requires the raptor app, and takes a much larger hit on FPS). OBS however is FOSS, and will record not just games but also capture cards, and any window/monitor you tell it to, even if it is not a game. 

Recommended paint software?

MS Paint, or Paint.Net 

Recommended editing software?

MOvie Maker, maybe Pitivi. There are probably others also, but these are the best at the free end from what I have seen.

GIMP 2 for image edditing. Or paint.net. Nvidia shadowplay for reccording.

For thumbnails, you can try GIMP as its like a lighter and free version of photoshop

 

I will try all of those and see what I comes out on top.

I googled Piviti and it looks like it only supports Linux based systems, maybe I'm just wrong.

there are not many good free options, a copy of sony movie studio can be bought cheap

Sorry about that. Try Lightworks personal (it is free, but pro cost for a license. You will not need the po license until you become a youtube partner) then.

Just downloaded both and will give them a bit of a test run.
