1 or 2 sticks

Go to solution Solved by Mao_Zedong,

Get a single stick. Even though dual channel may perform a few percent better, it really isn't significant, and it would cost a lot more to upgrade.

I'm getting an MSI H81M-E33 motherboard that supports DDR3 1333MHz and 1600MHz RAM. It has 2 slots. I was wondering if I should get 2 x 4GB sticks or an 8GB stick for a total of 8GB. I'd like to upgrade to 16GB later on. The 8GB stick is cheaper than 2 x 4GB. By getting an 8GB stick, it would be easier to upgrade but with 2 x 4GB, I can still use my computer if one stick is defective or dies. What would you recommend that I do?

going with two sticks is always better. dual channel increases the memory bandwidth. there is noticeable performance increases from running with two sticks over just one.

If I'm correct the motherboard only has 2 ram slots, therefore 1 8GB stick for now and adding another stick later is better. You won't be able to upgrade your ram at all if you go dual channel.

PC and Peripherals:

Intel Core i3 4150 @3.5GHz - ASRock H97M Anniversary - Kingston Fury HyperX Black 8GB DDR3 @1866MHz - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 G1 Gaming 2GB GDDR5 - EVGA 500W 80+ Certified - WD Caviar Blue 1TB - WD Caviar Blue 160GB - Lian Li PC-50 - Linux Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS - Acer P221w 21.5" 1680x1050 60Hz - Kingston Fury HyperX Clouds - Razer Deathadder 3.5G - CM Storm Quickfire Rapid w/ Cherry MX Blues

I'm going to be getting the Pentium anniversary edition (cheap!!!!), save more money and then get a better CPU that supports faster ram and then get another 8GB stick.
