So I built my machine probably about almost 2 years ago at this point, and have only recently started to really concern myself with the heat that it generates. Now I'm unsure if this heat creation has always happened or not but at this point it's irrelevant.

The reason I am starting to look at it now is because I want to overclock a bit (3.4GHz stock on the chip.) I am currently sitting at these temps at a stock idle (PC has been on for a day, and a bunch of tabs open in Firefox but that's it:)

Core 1 - 38
Core 2 - 35

Core 3 - 36
Core 4 - 40

Package - 41

Now I have seen people have stock idle temps closer to ~30 degrees, am I abnormally high for stock idle temps or am I wrong? I did remove and reapply the stock thermal paste a few months back with Thermaltake TG-4 paste. I am currently running the stock cooler, yes I am aware that I should upgrade it if I wish to OC, I am looking into viable cooling options.

Asus P8Z77-V LE Plus Motherboard
G.Skill 16GB RAM
2 fans in the top, one in the back (all push)

1 fan in the fron for intake.
2x 550 TI GFX cards, would willingly remove one for the reduction of ambient heat.

take in mind that idle temps are HIGHLY dependant on the ambient temperature, for me it even differs on the time of day. (sun up = higher outside temps = higher idle temps)

we cant really quote OC capabilities on idle temps, but if you get yourself a nice big tower cooler (like bequiet) i'm pretty sure you'll be fine.

that's expected if its the stock cooler. its normal, nothing to worry about.

What heatsink are you using? That's normal for a stock heatsink.

30 degrees is only normal if you're using a liquid cooler or high end air cooler.

What do temps look like under load? That's what you should worry about.

I don't do signatures.

That sounds about normal for a stock cooler IMO. Maybe go into your bios and increase the fan curve at lower speeds. You and I have similar set ups so I know you're motherboard has the option. Possibly reclean the fins of the stock fan? If you're willing to spend $35 according to newegg you could get the Hyper 212 EVO (great cheap after market cooler which is also what i use for my 3570k at 4.3Ghz. At idle is around 30-32 and max load is 55) and get better temps. Cheap upgrade that will last you a while.

Otherwise I'd monitor the temps of the graphics cards because they'll put out more heat then your CPU.

There is no benefit in OC'ing, because those 550 Ti's will hold you back.

My temps at load are about 75 degree average, few degrees give or take.

I am thinking about getting a closed loop water cooling system, simply to cut down on noise, not that the machine is all that loud, however there's a deal on one locally that seems to be a great starter system (no need to go for a full custom loop, just a CPU loop for me)

arniks: perhaps, however I do plan to upgrade the 550's down the road so it'd be nice to be pre-setup for when that time comes.

I wasn't saying that you shouldn't OC, but at least wait until you get proper cooling.

I can get anywhere from half a GHz to a full GHz on stock air from what I have seen, however I am certainly looking into an AIO close loop system (found a Antec Kuhler 1250 for 65 bucks locally)

Save it and put it towards a new GPU.

Why do you want to overclock?

Why do you want to overclock?

Because I can? I'd much rather have a good cooling system than a $200+ GPU, for the amount of gaming I do (fired up battlefield 4 once this month) it's just not worth it to me to have the GPU power and have things run warm. Plus I run 3 monitors so I kinda need 2 video cards until I upgrade the monitors.

I mean really for $65 what do I have to lose. $65?

Ok.  But what runs hot in your system?  Those CPU numbers are fine.

If you are looking at a new CPU cooler, you should factor in noise.  How loud is that pump?  How loud is the fan on the rad?

A CM Hyper 212 EVO ($40 CND), will give you OC room... but it is loud at 100%.

Yea I wasn't sure if I was out of it with my temps or not, guess I am and I won't worry about it (I was right before new thermal paste though I think.)

The pump I'm looking at is actually pretty silent, 49dB full blast, I also found another one that only has one fan and is 29dB at 200RPM, I'm not really worried about noise since I turn my PC off at night and I won't likely notice it otherwise (PC is mounted under the desktop.)

49dB is freakin' loud.  You want to aim for under/around 25dB (including where your PC resides).  Under 20dB, or so, is practically silent.  Pumps run at 100% all the time and are generally in the thousands (Reported RPM)...like 4000 RPM....my closed loop pump runs at over 4000 RPM(older system).

The last one I found locally for $65 used on a classifieds, the first one I have yet to look into. The video review I watched of the Antec unit seemed more like the noise came from when you cranked the fans up to 2000 RPM, and you could set a fan curve accordingly.

I the Antec so much.  You are stuck with whatever fans they give you.  If something happens to the fan, you are screwed.

The Thermaltake 120mm looks fine, go for it.

Yea that's the biggest downfall I can see to that myself, just sucks I recently spent a goot $70 on new case fans, perhaps I can reuse them in other places in the case, OR maybe I can just buy a new case, however I really like my V3 Black, quite a conundrum I have.

Biggest issue is finding it in stock on that unit, seems to be sold out EVERYWHERE.
