Linux VM

Go to solution Solved by Altecice,

I'l be running it from a decent desktop, Want around 3 machines

I would look into Oracle virtual box (https://www.virtualbox.org/). Very simple to set up your VMs, there are loads of guide out there.

I want to setup a VM to run a Java application that uses around 500MB's of RAM, does anyone know a guide to set this up and which version of Linux I should use? It will also need to run a VPN.

I would use Ubuntu. Do you have its own hardware to run this VM on or will it be running from your desktop?

Awesome, should I use 32 bit ubuntu? Considering I wont be allocating much RAM to the machine

I would use 64 bit for wider compatibility.

I second the vote for VirtualBox, I've been using it for a while and it's pretty flexible. As much as I like Ubuntu, I might try out Lubuntu for that RAM allocation. It has less stuff from the outset and runs in less RAM than stock Ubuntu.

Thanks, just had a look and I'll try it

What is the host OS? If it is linux, I would go for something more lightweight like Linux KVM. Or even containerization with Docker.

They both have GUIs available if you want and are crazy fast and lightweigh compared to Virtualbox or VMware.

If you're going to suggest something lighter than Ubuntu... why are you suggesting something that's derived from ubuntu, when Ubuntu is already a derived Distro?

Install Debian, and then look back and cry about how you ever used Ubuntu.

Or install something to containerize your processes. Much better.
