Hi guys,

I want to upgrade my system , but I don't really know what to upgrade first. GPU or CPU.

My system specs are as follow:

-AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black edition (Can still be overclocked, running stock now at idle 27 C, load high 40)

- Prolimatech Armageddon (CPU cooler)

-Asus M5A78L-M/USB3

-16 GB RAM 1600Mhz

-Asus DirectCU Gtx550ti

-1 TB hard drive

-CX600M PSU

I am looking for an ssd as well, but was wondering to spend my money on a GPU or CPU first. Thinking about a 970 or 980ti (If I can work allot this summer) , or and intel 4770k/4790k with mobo. I am planning to buy (When this all is upgraded) a ultra wide qhd monitor.

Thanks in advance!

Edit:

I am not afraid to buy used parts, so if you can make a good suggestion that way, that would be great ^^.

My current rig:

CPU :Intel I7 4790K , MOBO: Asus Maximus Hero VII , STORAGE: Plextor m6e 256Gb + WD Black 3Tb, GPU(s): 1x ASUS STRIX GTX 1060, PSU: Corsair RM1000 , CASE: Fractal Design S.

I would build a new system with parts from your system now, like PSU, RAM, HDD

CPU: Xeon 1230v3 - GPU: GTX 770  - SSD: 120GB 840 Evo - HDD: WD Blue 1TB - RAM: Ballistix 8GB - Case: CM N400 - PSU: CX 600M - Cooling: Cooler Master 212 Evo

Update Plans: Mini ITX this bitch

This ^^ or if you don't want to do that I would split the GPU and CPU then. The i7 would be bottlenecked by that GPU as well as the 970/980ti bottlenecked by the CPU. If you don't want a new system with some of your parts now, I would say get an i5 4460/4690k and R9 280(x) (knowing you would have to get a different mobo.)

Go for the CPU upgrade first... Even an i3-4130 is better then that one.

Take the ram, PSU, and Hard drive out of that system, and put them into something like this.

Then add a GTX 970 or R9 290 or 290x later on, replacing your 550ti.

Then add an SSD like this one when you have the chance.

Fine you want the PSU tier list? Have the PSU tier list: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1116640-psu-tier-list-40-rev-103/

I've got an pretty good deal on an used ASUS ROG Z97 Maximus VII HERO and an M.2 PCi ssd 256 for about 240 dollars. Now going to save for the 4790k, since I can really use the hyperthreading for school. And then work hard this summer for the GPU ^^
