HP Elitebook 2740p with Core i5 and 4GB RAM?

Go to solution Solved by AnnoyedShelf,

I was just wondering if this notebook that I have laying around would be good enough for folding effectively and without overheating. I know that Intel CPUs are much better for cooling, as most AMD laptops (for some reason, especially HP laptops) overheat. Intel usually does not have that issue. So this would be better than using my Toshiba AMD laptop with Windows 8.1.

This laptop has a Core i5 with 4GB RAM and Windows 7 Pro. I know that folding does not have many requirements, I just want to know if I can leave this on all night and have confidence it won't overheat. So do you guys think I can do this?

I really like the idea of folding, as I can just use the computing power I have just laying around for good use, especially medical purposes.

You can, but don't expect to get crazy amounts done.  It's better if you have a dedicated GPU for folding, but you could definitely fold on your laptop.  You can also adjust the load level, so that if it does happen to put out more heat than you're comfortable with, you can throttle it back a little.

Cooling on these laptops is pretty good but still folding on a laptop is asking for trouble.

I understand. I am thinking I will have it on medium tonight but I will experiment a little. Thanks a lot, I just wanted some input from someone other than myself.

Yes, but I'll experiment and just see if it will work. I am working on building a desktop for a replacement of all my laptops. I literally have 4 laptops that are just in storage, but no desktop build, but one from a manufacturer.

Sell the laptops :P

It'd probably be best... everyone in my house would be like "Where are the laptops?" when they didn't touch them for a year. LOL.

I have (had is better) a HP Probook 4420s with a core i5 and 4GB of ram WIndows 7. I killed it folding one night. So be careful is what I'll add on too this.

For laptops I always recommend using the Chrome client and not the FAH client. Chrome client works very well on laptops. Don't get crazy points but can do a lot of WU's...

Wow. That is very much like my system (RAM, CPU, and OS are the same). I'll probably just wait until I build my custom build.

I have a Samsung laptop gutted down to just the motherboard and a fan blowing on it. Currently has an i3 2xxx in it (can't remember) and 4gb of ram running F@H. I would do the same thing with that laptop possibly or some of the other ones. Temps so far are amazing and ill make sure to post pictures when I'm finished configuring them.
