Internal vs External DVD drive?

Go to solution Solved by ZetZet,

DVD drives are slow as heck I would ONLY buy external. You only use it rarely and atleast when it's external you could use it on your laptop and stuff.

Hello,

I don't know where to post this topic but it does seem relate to storage so I'll put it here.

Just a quick question. Is there any disadvantage to using a USB external DVD or CD drive (for read, watching movies, songs, etc) over a traditional 5.25 inch DVD drive bay? I don't actually know what is the proper name for the internal drive but I hope you know what I mean.

Some people say DVD/CD drives do not saturate the SATA or even USB transfer rate. I currently own a $20 LG DVD read/write 5.25 inch bay device and problem I have is that after I upgraded to a new case my PSU SATA power cable is not long enough to reach the front of the case so I got a LG DVD drive sitting in the 5.25 bay doing nothing, not a big deal since I rarely use it. But in the future should I ditch it for an external USB DVD/CD drive instead?

Thanks!

No difference, it's still slow as a snail. I have a external one that gathers dust since putting one in a PC makes it look ugly.

No difference apart for the fact that you can use the external one with any pc

Thanks for the reply guys. So if I get something like this.....

https://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&id2=20&bid=9&sid=223479&

OR this

https://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&id2=20&bid=9&sid=245723&

To watch HD movies or install software, will that be fine? Can I install Windows 8 (CD package) via USB dvd drive like those above?

Because my father got an external USB DVD reader too, but when we tried to install Windows 8 from CD the motherboard does not detect the USB DVD reader. We suspect that the DVD reader we used was old and probably damaged, so I want to make sure if I could install an OS with it.

Also when one says its a "DVD writer" does it also read? See the second link, the Samsung one.

Thanks!

Actually some old computers couldn't boot from USB anything. New ones can read usb drives, but you should install windows with a flash drive not dvd drive.

Every dvd writer also reads. (disclaimer, some very ancient stuff might not also read)

Thanks for the clarification.

I know this is suppose to be a DVD drive topic but can I copy everything from the Windows 8 CD to a USB thumbdrive? Because my family only has multiple copies of Windows 8 (not even Windows 8.1) on CDs from retail stores.

The reason why I ask this because Windows 10 is coming which you can get if you "update" from your current version of Windows (Win 7, 8 or 8.1). But I am also upgrading my CPU and motherboard to an Intel platform so that means I should do a fresh install of Windows 8 and update to 10 from there. But because I only have copies of Windows 8 on CDs, can I copy the contents of the CD to a USB thumbdrive before reinstalling Windows 8?

Well if not then I'll try to get my internal 5.25" DVD reader working again. No big deal either way.

You can download windows 8.1 for free here and make a usb bootable drive http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

No need to copy anything.
