Testing a 7970 (no cooler)

I got a 7970 with a waterblock that I need to test. However, my pump is installed in my main rig right now. I have an older rig with a PCI-e 2.0 motherboard laying around that should work (with ram+cpu and an PSU). However, I don't have the original cooler from the card.

I do have a windforce x3 cooler laying around from my 670 (the long one, not the short one) and I could take off the cooler from my old 4870. Could I just tape them on if I can't find enough overlapping screw holes?

if you just want to see if it turns on then you might do it but not for long. But i personally wouldnt do it...

The waterblock should be fine for a minute or two. Just as long as the card doesn't go under load.

If you turn it on just long enough to see the mobo splash screen, maybe enter the bios, you should be fine.

 

Just don't boot into Windows.  Bad things will happen. :lol:

You could use some toothpaste in place of thermal paste for now as well.
