Hi, i recently had a computer die on me, i turn it on and within 5-60 sec it shuts down with no warning just gone. i think its overheating but cant be 100% sure.
each time i turn it on after it shutting down the time it takes to shut down reduces, again i think because of heat not being cooled away.

my question here is how the hell can i figure out what is overheating? if i new i could replace it easy without spending to much money. i dont own any testing equipment, and dont really want to buy anything expensive to figure this out.

if anyone has a clever way to sort my issue i would be grateful.

open up your computer and touch the heatsink fan

is it very hot?

also try to remove all the dust inside

try to remount the cooler and reapply the thermal paste

if the cooler feels warm but not hot

then it could be your PSU giving up on you

i hadn't thought of that, its just the time it takes to turn off reduces each time i turn it on that made me think heat was the issue. i do have another computer would there be any risk in swapping that psu into the broken pc to see if it works?

also thanks for your help.

It's no way because of PSU, make sure the thermal compound didn't turn out dry, if it did; Make sure you change it with new thermal paste.

yea i assumed it wasn't the psu, but for all i know i could of been wrong. i will check the thermal compound first,  any other ideas if this fails?

if you got a spare PSU

plug that in and see if the system boots up

Sometimes, it may happens that, the CPU fan header pins doesn't meets its power demands which causes the CPU fan to slow down. If in that case, your PSU failed to supply enough power to your system. So, thereby, you might need to go for another PSU.

ok thanks to both of you, i will try this. im guessing there's little to no risk of my working power supply breaking here? i dont want to have to buy another one :D

is there a chance its got nothing to do with the cpu cooler or the psu like maybe the motherboard its self? or is that unlikely?

Unlikely. Always possible but unlikely in this case. You can easily check your temperatures without entering windows from the BIOS. Spam the delete key (sometimes its F2 or F12) as soon as you press the power button.

Take a look and see what the idle CPU temp is sitting at.

considering its booting off a rather slow hdd i dont  think i will have time before it shuts down.

but still had some good advice and will try it all once i get a day off.

thanks all.

Getting to your BIOS has nothing whatsoever to do with your hard drive. You're literally pressing your power button and then immediately hitting Del key repeatedly til the BIOS comes up.

Only do that if you have extra thermal paste on hand.

otherwise you'll end up putting air pockets in the thermal paste that was already applied, and that will kill your cooling performance.

I believe that isopropyl alcohol is what people suggest you use for removing it. (Put some on a cloth or something and use that to wipe it off)
