Has Linus made any videos recently testing gaming performance of GPUs with lower end cpus? I still have my athlon 760k, but after buying GTA V I'm strongly considering putting a GTX 960 in my system. I am not sure of the performance boost it will give me though. I will still have issues with single-threaded performance, but the question is how much?

Any input is appreciated.

It'll be fine. The performance difference with a better CPU will not be worth the cost to upgrade, especially with a card along the performance level of a 960.

I wouldn't run it off a CX430 though

That was my problem. I was going to pick up a 285 for $150, but I would need to upgrade my PSU also. Plus I prefer nvidia tech after dealing with AMD for years.

i'd say go for the 960 (or equivalent card) as well.

if you want to see how much your cpu will hold back your framerate in gta v, reduce all settings as low as they will go including resolution and run the benchmark. this will show you how high the framerate can go with your cpu in that game. i'd be interested to know how high it will be. i know it sounds weird but this way you'll know what to expect with a better graphics card. say gta v with all settings down to minimum runs at 45-50 fps, getting a better gpu won't bring the framerate any higher than that limit. and it is better to know that before you spend the money :P

regardless, i'd say get the 960. it will be bottlenecked in some games but your cpu should be able to run it well enough in most.

Probably going to get whatever is cheapest off of amazon so I can use Prime shipping.

Although after looking at power consumption the 970 will probably run fine off of my psu. the Strix version only has 1x 8pin pcie. cx430 has 384W on the 12v rail.

that would be cutting it very very close, and your cpu would bottleneck the 970 massively. a cpu upgrade would fix that but that power supply would be cutting it very close as i said, as the power supply gets older it will provide less power on the 12v rail and it wouldn't take much degradation for it become not enough.

yes it would be a bottleneck, but the next upgrade will most likely be an i5. And it is cutting it close for the limit of the PSU.
