Should i upgrade to windows 8.1 or re-install windows 7

Go to solution Solved by laxer,

If you have windows 8 it is snappier than 7. (UI is faster, powershell is great, just not out of the box ready)

If you don't stick with 7, you really aren't missing very much.

I just upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8... here are my main observations...

Windows 8 takes longer to boot up than 7

Windows 8 UI is far faster than 7

Gaming performance is about the same on both.

FWIW, I have heard windows 8 runs really well on older hardware, not that your system is that dated but I would be interested to see if this impacts anything

So this laptop is currently running windows 7 the copy ( it been on the laptop for over 4 years )   i am going to install a fresh copy of windows next week so am thinking should i install windows 7 again   or  install windows 8.1 ?

it's a Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5018
laptop spec:

Processor 2.2GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core T4400 Memory 3GB DDR3 SDRAM 800MHz Hard drive 320GB at 5,400rpm     Graphics Intel GMA 4500M Operating System Windows 7 Home Premium

Im using a desktop your computer does not have to be a touch screen laptop ;3. upgrade and taste what windows 8 is like, if you dont like it then move back to windows 7. You never know which is better for you until you give it a go.

give windows 8 a try, not 8.1 just yet. Its not been released to the public so a fair amount of things are bound to be broken. WIndows 8 is running just fine for me.....better than 7 in my opinion.....

Personally I really like Windows 8.  I have it on my desktop with no touchscreen and it works nicely.  Its a snappy OS and I really enjoy using the modern ui instead of a start button, so if you do upgrade try it out! Also if you're going to 8.1 prepare for some software bugs and compatibility issues.

What? On my system Win 8 boots about twice as fast as Win 7 did. You're the first that I've seen say it takes longer.

Windows 8 takes longer to boot up than 7

Doesn't Windows 8 have fast boot, which allows a computer to boot in seconds... Many motherboard manufacturer's included a switch that takes a person straight into BIOS because they found it was too hard to hit the delete key fast enough themselves... Maybe you have a hardware problem.... Or a setting somewhere, but you really shouldn't have that issue

And as for the actual topic, if you have Windows 8 installed I think you can upgrade to 8.1 for free through the store once it gets out of beta. Windows 8 does, in my opinion of course, look much better than 7. Just the little things but there isn't too much difference between 7 and 8

I am good at computer

Wut Windows 8 boots up faster than Windows 7 for me. It only takes my computer 10seconds to boot (not including bios posting) and im using a HDD.

I am using a motherboard that is a few years old. Don't get me wrong it does "boot" faster but things on startup and the time before it is ready are considerably longer...

Note this is on two corsair force 3 gts in raid 0.

this guy is right but the bott time thing is only apllicable to systems with less than 8gbs of ram. After 8gbs your system can hybrid boot and it turns on with ssd speeds....my system takes 10 seconds to turn on...i dont have an ssd......if you can quantify what you mean with numbers when you say windows 8 takes longer to boot up that would be helpfull....

I should probably update my BIOs to see if that helps...

FWIW, 16gbs of ram at 1866MHz, AMD PII x6 1090T @ 4.1GHz, 2 corsair force 3 gts in raid-0 (advertised 555/515 read write each)

I cant quantify it as I don't have 7 anymore but, with 7 I could boot up my computer grab a drink from the fridge right next to it sit down and it would be ready.

Doing the same with 8, it will be on the desktop but my startup applications will still be loading despite the fact I had more on 7.

These are just my observations, no stats to back them. My bios from 2009 could also be to blame  ;)

Don't get me wrong, I like 8 and I would consider it an upgrade from 7. I just wouldn't pay anything for this upgrade,  -_-
