So I have an I5 4690k, cooled by a hyper 212 EVO and a Gigabyte Z97-HD3 Motherboard.

I have used Gigabytes EasyTune to overclock to 4.5 GHz, but am still not happy with performance.

It currently hits about 60 C under load.

Can I go higher, and if so, how? I have almost no experience with overclocking, and the experience I do have is all with EasyTune and similar programs.

Is used primarily for gaming, the game in question here is PlanetSide 2 (Which tells me that my CPU is my bottleneck).

Also I have a GTX 970 and 16 GB of RAM, the game is on a SSD.

Why do people on LTT love the word "bottleneck" so much?...

A 4690K will not "bottleneck" anything when it comes to gaming. Come on, its a high end quad-core, not an old Pentium 4.

I am not saying that my system is bottlenecked, but rather the game, which is very poorly optimized and very CPU intensive.

DX12 will probably fix my issue anyways...

So do you still need any help with overclocking, or are you going to use Linus' guide?

I more just want to know if you guys would recommend going any higher on the I5 Devil's Canyon.

Keep voltages below 1.35, however on that cooler, try to stick under 1.3. Just raise the multiplier as high as you can and set memory to XMP. So yeah, you can try to go higher if temps are alright.

The term bottleneck gets thrown around a lot. It's starting to get annoying, mainly because 95% it's not a BOTTLENECK.

I use the term bottleneck because the game tells me my CPU is the limiting factor, as in it is not taxing my GPU because the CPU is slowing it down in this specific scenario

Exactly. Its mainly used by inexperienced people who heard it somewhere and think every damn thing is a bottleneck ;)

Would like to point out that i have built multiple PCs, and used to be running on AMD, i know what a true bottleneck feels like. Also i have more posts than either of you.

Oh wow, more posts. That certainly means you are more experienced and have better knowledge than both of us. You may want to consider that we may be regulars on other PC forums and simply browse LTT once in a while. Just saying "I used to be running on AMD, I know what a true bottle neck feels like" already says enough, really... Try not to get so defensive next time, as I wasn't even specifically addressing you.

i was going to lend a helping hand, but i feel I shouldn't after reading hostility. "please help me! also, shut up i have more experience because i post more!" Sooo you don't need help in the first place?

Overclock till you burn your cpu, then you can have even more experience on what not to do, to back up all your posting.

While you are at it spam the words "nice build" in the builds section, so you can gain even more experience there.

-------

Put your CPU to 1.35v and crank your clock speed. Yes, you should always go as high as your temp lets you. Stay under 80c and under 1.35v. ez pz even a guy with 5 post can figure that out...

I didnt mean to feel salty, but a lmgtfy link is kind of rude IMO and i thought it was against the CoC.

you might be abler I go higher , you definitely have thermal headroom. You'll want to set your multipliers to say 1.6ghz , and change your voltage to something around perhaps 1.25 or so (you might be able to go lower , you might need more. That's fine ) then stress test for 2 or 3 hours with something like Aida 64 , I'd it doesn't fail then go and bump it up a bit more until you find a point where it won't go higher / bsod, then back it off again. I wouldn't expect your 4690k to get much more then 4.7ghz if your lucky however

Please quote me or tag me if your trying to talk to me , I might see it through all my other notifications ^_^

Cant imagine I5 4690k bottlenecking at all. I used to have fx 6300 weeks ago that is the true bottleneck.

And what monitor you running btw?

If is a 1080p then thermal might be the problem as it rises when you are playing it will drops the fps.

if is a 1440p then at ultra in some games your fps is fairly normal I would say.

if is 4k then your cpu and gpu are performing damn freaking well.

And with a 970 a 4.5ghz overclock is more than enough. I have almost exact same setup as you. But you can look into overclocking gpu too.

Planetside is a notoriously CPU intensive game.  Large multiplayers games in general can strain even the best CPUs, of which the 4690K is one.

IF I may offer my $0.02

Overclocking past 4.5 isn't going to help much and it's just a waste of lifespan and heat and energy at that point. The game isn't optimized well and OC above 4.5 isn't really worth it... for anything.

Also, if you're so experienced because you've had AMD and an i5k now, you should know more about voltages and overclocking than to use 'EasyTune'...
