Different memory in diff slots

So if I put a dual channel kit in slot 1 and 3rd, and a different dual channel kit in slot 2nd and 4th, will it work properly if they are both 1600mhz ,  even if one is cl9 and cl11?

Never mix memory of different timings it wont work.Unless you force the cl9 memory to do cl11.

Assuming that for none of the sticks 1600 MHz is with XMP, it'll choose 1600 MHz with the highest latencies

If you want to do that. Put the memory with the cl9 latency first. Change the timings for the exact timing of the ther other than all should be fine.Then all should be fiine. Although it might not be necessary

Its just that I will buy 8gb now and upgrade later to another 8 if I find a good offer

As long as all sticks of RAM are the same capacity no. Have you looked at ultra low profile DDR3? It might be of some use as you can buy sticks not much higher than the top of the RAM slots-if they are higher at all.
