It just shows hard drive activity not needed really anymore.

I find they're pretty helpful for diagnostic reasons.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

True, but programs can take up the functionality.

I find it's helpful sometimes when my computer is all locked up and just to make sure it's actually locked up cause usually I'll usually look at the indicator to check that it's not just busy doing something.
