There's probably a prologue which clears up some of the back story like there was in AoK, so technically it won't really matter, you could read up on the lore on wiki or somewhere. From an experience pov I would say you need to play it at some point though it's a great RPG.

The beauty of the witcher games is that they are story-light, but lore heavy. Also, the games are a sequel to the books, where much of the story begins and where the games draw from.

I'm willing to bet that the Witcher 3 fills in enough of the lore that you could beat 3, and then go back and play 1 and 2 without feeling weird. Witcher 1 is especially confusing at first because the back-story from the books isn't handed to you up-front, and you spend the first part of the game wondering  what the hell is going on.

I know nothing about this game series, but if u can buy a second hand version cheap I would do it. As it would help decide if its Worth paying full whack for a newer version of a game u may not like.

There was no prologue in witcher 2 for witcher 1.

For OP, i'd recommend witcher 2. It should be available from key re sellers for like 5 bucks right now, it was on sale for 3 bucks on steam the other day. It's kind of clunky, too be honest, but still fairly enjoyable. The story in the Witcher 1 is fairly unrelated to Witcher 2, it's not really nescessary for understanding of the story. It's kind of clarified in the beginning of Witcher 2, so you'll not need it. I'd still recommend reading a plot summary if you dont play it.

Corsair is overrated, and Anime is ruined by the people who watch it

I worded that horrendously, I meant that with it being a bigger release with hype the "prologue" will likely explain any relevant back story to those new to the series. But yeah you're right AoK's didn't give anything away I'd expect this one to. My apologies its been a long day.

I just play in order just to give myself a better understanding of the games and the characters, but that's gonna take a lot of time. I'm currently 30 hours into the first one and I'm not even done with chapter 4. If you want to play the ones prior to witcher 3, prepare to wait for a looooong time. Though maybe the save game carried over might be worth it for you

I haven't played through them in full, but I found this article somewhat helpful.

Steam practically gave away Witcher 2 for the last few sales, pretty much guaranteed it's gonna drop down to 2 dollars again in the summer sale.

I actually bought bundled sale of Witcher 1 and 2 for this reason... also might pickup actual books for being away from the computer entertainment.

i played witcher 1 about 30% through and witcher 2 50% through all i can say dont play witcher 1 if you like gameplay alot it has horrendous learning curve on the combat mechanic and awful gameplay overall. In my opinion it is still a good game except for the combat and witcher 2 told alot of the lore from 1 in a quick kinda summary way so you dont really need to play 1

I played the 2nd one for a bit and didn't like it. The surrounding graphics were great. The optimization sucked maxed out and the witcher's hair looked like ps2 graphics.
