M5A88FX Pro Rev 2 - POST Failure

Go to solution Solved by DotBowder,

Issue ended up being a faulty front panel IO. Not sure which part, but corsair shipped out a new one. Once they were swapped out, it worked just fine.

Specs:

CPU: Phenom II x6

Mobo: M5A99FX Pro Rev 2.

RAM: 1600Mhz 9-9-9-24 2x 2GB sticks, 2x 4GB sticks

PSU: 850Watt Thermaltake

GPU: Radeon HD 7950

Old Board:

Mobo: MSI 970A-G45

Backstory:

2 weeks ago - GPU temps started going way higher than normal. 85C+ under normal work loads (At this time I was using the MSI 970A-G45 motherboard and had been for 2 years.) I pulled the graphics card out and put it in to two separate systems and the GPU temp was normal in those systems. I put the GPU back into this system and the temps were still high. I took a 430Watt PSU (Should be ok to use as long as I don't overclock and whatnot) and tested the GPU with that. The temps were still very hot. I expected this to be a problem with the motherboard after double checking every power supply cord, resetting the bios, (Unfortunately I have not yet tried re-installing windows / installing windows to another free drive, because it would have been a lot more inconvenient then normally at the moment.) I have picked up a new motherboard from Frys (M5A99FX Pro Rev 2.) and am now attempting to set up this system.

Issue: When I press the power button to boot up the computer, it appears to be going through the post process, but after ~ 3 seconds the system shuts off.

When the system is powered on the typical order of lights/fans and whatnot is as follows

1 Press Power Button

2 Fans/CPU Pump turn on

3 Memory Light turns on

4 CPU Light turns on

5 System Shuts off

- When the system has power connected to it, there is a green LED which is always on. This is common on many other Asus boards. This light does not flicker, it does not wain, it is on 100% of the time.

- In the majority of my tests, I am using 1x 2GB stick of memory in the "A2" slot, which is what the mobo manual directs is the best slot to use when using 1 stick of memory.

What I have checked:

I have swapped the power supply with a known working psu, no change.

I have tested multiple, known working, memory sticks in a 1 stick configuration in multiple slots, no change

I have tested with NO VGA card in the system, There is no Beeps, It shuts off in the same way described above.

I have tested with the VGA in the 16x slot, the 4x slot, the 2nd 16x slot, same issue as above.

I have verified the Corsair pump is turning on, & the fans are turning on.

I have tested swapping the CPU fan header with a normal fan in an attempt to trick the system in case the corsair pump wasn't reporting an RPM to the mobo causing the mobo to insta-shutdown if it has some feature like that.

I have tested with NO memory sticks in the system. When this occurs, I DO get the "No Memory" beep code, but the system shuts off in a similar manor, the memory code beeps, then the memory light turns on for a few moments, then the cpu light turns on, then the system powers off.

I have used the Bios Flash Back button to update the Bios to the most current version (I cannot boot to verify that it was successful, During a bios flash, in this instance, the fans never turn on, which should be normal to my understanding. Per the manual's instructions: [Plug USB into the specified USB port on the back of the mobo with the BIOS in the root dir on the drive after it was renamed using the Bios rename utility from asus' website, Press BIOSFLASHBACK button on the mobo for 3 seconds, it flashes for ~2-5 minutes, then the led turns off.] This all completed normally.

I have reset the CMOS multiple times. I have reset it by method of pulling the 3v button battery and the Power. I have also reset it by method of leaving the 3v button battery in, unplugging the power cable, and using the jumper per the manual's instruction. After it resets, the system appears to be powered on for 2-3 additional seconds, however,it looks like it's doing some preliminary configuration prior to POST, and then attempts to start posting, and then we end up right back where we were before.

I have used Asus's MEMOK tool to attempt to auto-set the correct settings for the memory modules. When I press the button, the system takes an additional ~4 seconds to get to where it shuts down, but it all results in the same order of issues described above

I am no n00b to computers. I've been doing this stuff for 5+ years. I work in IT for a living and have been watching linustechtips religiously for 4-5 years or so. I think my board or CPU is bad, but don't have any more spares around that I'm certain are working. Anybody have any input on this, suggestions?
