I just got my msi 990fxa-gd65 motherboard and while figuring out how best to route the cables in my case I have run into a bit of a snag. There is a 6 pin pcie power connector located right next to all the pci slots on the board. It says that it is for cards that require power from the slot. Does this mean I have to have it connected or can I leave it unconnected as I don't seem to have any 6 pin cables long enough to route to it without going over the all the cards.

AMD FX-4100(Temporary), MSI 990FXA-GD65, 8GB Dual-Channel DDR3, MSI 7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5/OC, MSI Radeon HD 5450, Asus Xonar DGX, M4 128GB SSD, 1TB Seagate Baracuda HDD, 250GB Hitachi HDD, CoolerMaster Silent Pro 700W PSU, CoolerMaster Storm Scout, Corsair H50

When you say crazy, what we talking about here? Do you mean oc on the gpu, cpu or both.

That 6-pin located near the PCI-e slots has basically nothing to do with the CPU. The standard PCI-e 2.0 slot can deliver up to 74W of power I think.... If you have 2 or more cards they need more power from both PSU and the motherboard itself.

The PCI-e 3.0 slots however, can deliver up to 300w of power meaning even mid range cards could now be made without any power connectors. (My dad has a PCI-e 2.0 motherboard with a Sapphire HD5670 - 1GB DDR5 128bit and it does not have any power connectors)

Case: Corsair 350D | Mobo: Asrock Z77 Pro4-M | Ram: Patriot Viper Extreme 16GB 1866MHz | CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K | CPUC: Corsair H60 2013 | PSU: Antec TP-750 | SSD: Kingston Samsung 840 Evo 250GB | GPU: Sapphire HD7950 | Monitor: Asus PB279Q (4K) | Keyboard: Gigabyte Osmium Aivia - Cherry MX Brown | Mouse: Logitech Performance MX
