Hello LTT community!

I live in the top section of a duplex and my landlord has the router down in his entryway, literally as far away from my computer as possible. So here is the problem: computer lives 1 story above, and about 40 feet over from my AP/Router, with many walls and high voltage devices in between. At the moment I have a USB antenna connected to a 3' USB extension which yields marginal (at best) reception. My AP cannot be moved, nor can I run cables directly to it. I can however place an antenna directly above the AP to eliminate a lot of walls and electrical interference.

My question is this: Is there such thing as an antenna that can run a 40+ foot cable?

My understanding is that USB voltage drop over more than a few feet would render USB devices useless. Ideally I would be looking for a device that takes power from a wall plug, then sends the signal over a CAT5/6 cable that i route through my unit back to my bedroom.

Thanks for taking the time to read and all help is appreciated!

You could try finding a Wi-Fi repeater, as I THINK it does what you are looking for.

Most optimally you would run an ethernet cable to the source.

Second would straight have a better Wi-FI setup, and move the router.

But a repeater isn't terrible.

There are WiFi to Ethernet adapters like http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Universal-Ethernet-Adapter-WNCE2001/dp/B003KPBRRW (first hit on google there are others)

Never tried one myself but if you have location with power and good reception to the AP where you can put a Ethernet cable to, its a better option then running long usb cables.

Could you use Powerline ethernet? is the Access point / router on the same breaker box as your pc?

Oh tatari mentioned it already.

HOLY AMAZEBALLS THANK YOU!!

@GzeroD I didn't even think of just using a long coax cable since my Mobo doesnt have built in wifi, nor do I have a PCI style wifi adapter that uses those connections, but that would be the simple solution for those that have those connections.

@TAtari That is EXACTLY what i was looking for I just couldn't come up with the appropriate search keywords because i haz the dumb

LTT Forum solution found in less than 30 minutes!
