Server Build Guide Help

Go to solution Solved by Sumsar,

Can I get anything decent for like $300? Like it just needs to be something good enough for RAID 10 with only 4 drives, right now there's only like max 2 - 3 people on the network so it doesn't need to be high end stuff, I would use one of my old bad desktops but it's too old to even handle Windows 7 it's only got .5GHZ so that won't work :(

I'd go for a Pentium G3220, 4GB ecc-unbuffered ram, a budget c222 motherboard, and pretty much any decent 80+ bronze or better PSU.

Hi, I need a starter server that can just hold 4 drives for RAID 10. The case can be plastic for all I care, which I don't. I just need to keep my files safe for now because my drives are dying. So...

CPU - ?

Motherboard - ?

Case - ?

Power Supply - ?

RAM - ?

RAID card - ?

EDIT #1

CPU - Pentium G3220?

Motherboard (depends on cpu if not a xeon) - ASUS H81M-K

Power Supply - ?

RAM - ?

RAID card - ?

Yeah budget?

i don't think you really need a powerful cpu, just spend a little more money on a reliable motherboard, a reliable power supply

My Old Rig: Phenom II X4 965 4.0 ghz, Asus Motherboard, 4 GB DDR3-1333, Antec Case and PSU, no video card atm

My New Rig: i5-4590, MSI Motherboard, 8 GB DDR3-1600, Corsair Case, XFX PSU, HD 7950

It will not draw a whole lot of power if it is idle 90+% of the time, maybe it's more like 70-80w. But it won' be very power hungry.

I had a look at some starter Xeons and they start at about $200+ so I'll try out the Pentium and see how things go, thanks for the idea and saving me money :)

If you can extend your budget by a bit ($150) then build this, put FreeNAS on it and be very happy about how safe your data is:

I'm not doing NAS. NAS is disgusting.
