basic question. How Long Do GPU's Last? i ask because i am getting a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 4GB WINDFORCE Video Card, and want to know how long will i have it till i should expect downfall on performance or just simply shutting down.

Well, depends on the gaming industry and the games they make, to make them not so hardware taxing/demanding

The Performance of a chip doesn't degrade (noticeable) over time. It is also pretty uncommon, that a chip simply stops working.

But that is only true, if you run it within a reasonable temp and voltage range. So if you are overclocking the shit out of your gpu, it might die within 2 years. Also there are other parts than the chip, that can break. The lifetime of them depends on the quality of the parts, that are used by the manufacturer.

 

To get a little more specific: I had a HD 7750 in low profile, single slot design, which means, that the cooling was pretty bad. So it was at 90-95°C under load... died after around 1,5 years. I still have an old nvidia card, which was mostly used in desktop-mode... It survived 7 years and still runs without any problems.

 

I would say, that you can expect your 980 to run longer, than you need it to, if you don't overvolt it to hard. In 3-4 years you will need to upgrade, because it just won't be powerful enough anymore...

Lol 4 years is a long time. I'm planning on upgrading from my 970 in 2.5 years time

That's just how it is. If you're willing to deal with low settings though, it could last twice as long. You're simply expecting too much, though. Even with consoles, only one generation has lasted more than 6 years, and only due to bad financial decisions.

4 years sounds pretty conservative and way too specific to be accurate. Video cards don't usually die from age alone. It's usually heat, mistreatment, or manufacturing defects. For whatever it's worth, I think my Voodoo 3 3000 still works.

 

Even so, how's a GTX 980 going to look in 2019? Like a power-hungry, underperforming piece of crap with fond memories attached to it. It probably won't even play Assassin's Creed XXXVI at 16K resolution!

Well my AGP nVidia TNT2 Vanta (made by MSi quite interestingly) from like 1998 still functions perfectly fine the last time I checked (a year ago?)

It depends on a ton of things.

 

With the way graphics have stagnated, the 980 should still be a very powerful card for the next 3-4 years.  Considering that a 7970 which was a top of the line card in 2011 is an upper mid range card still in 2015, albeit overclocked some.

 

The average person shouldn't need to upgrade their GPU more than every 3-4 years.

if you use it like a normal person 3 years , if your like me and volt mod/overclock/torture it ... as little as 6 months -2 years(if your lucky) haha

The GTX 680 is still a very nice gaming GPU a little more than three years later. So with the 980 about 8 months old 2.5 years of awesome performance might not be too bad a guess. Then again, the GTX 780 is still a monster a little less than two years after release, and looks like it's aging even better than the 680.
