Which is better and why? These will all be a backup/file server for 3-4 pcs. Maybe one from a vpn. it wont be a hard load so no need for wd reds.

Why is option 1 better?

Because it would use less power and possibly be more reliable in the long run, that's it.

Why so many threads? The Q6600 is about the same as a stock G3258 in over all performance? Obviously your better off with that performance on 2 threads instead of 4...

I'd keep what you have but replace it's PSU.

On the cpu the q6600 still has four cores which are needed in newer/ upcoming games compared to the G3258 which only has two. But the G3258 has better IPC and clock rates for single core performance. This seems like an upgrade that won't change much for overall performance

Keep in mind this isn't for gaming.

yeah, but if he decides to do something else with it, or just upgrade it for other needs. he will be able to.

either way, the pre build's psu = no go for me.

id say this,

get the pre build. but change the psu, or at least check some reviews about it. oem's are usually bad.  if you really don't want to be able to upgrade. the q6600 will be perfect for the job needed. and its cheaper.

I was think of getting the option1 and using the q6600 for folding. Great now 2 machines running 24/7. i would expand to 2 2tb drives at some point. i might alos try to take a pc from work and making a vpn and connecting it to this nas. hard but maybe can be done. thats where i may need the extra performance. and the work pc is a majority to be backuped  @Aniallation

Would I need the new system to make a vpn and connect from a pc outside my network? I would assume that would require more performance.

I would be surprised if running the VPN used more than 2-3% of either CPU while doing a file transfer.
