Your current setup is ok, but not great for 1440p. It should be able to run ok in general, as the 670s will be around as fast as a single 970. I would personally wait for skylake if I were you, but thats just me.

Currently have a 8350 & sli 670s

with a new amd gpu apparently coming out in the next few months and the

new intel cpu maybe coming out this year?

Would it be worth upgrading or is my current set up still fine for gaming at 1440p

I would upgrade, but that's just me.

Though your current build will start showing it's age pretty soon.

The new intel CPU's are not exactly power houses so that would not be worth it.

Skylake is more low powered processors, so they are not likely to be worth the wait IMO. But I do agree, get a 970 or two if you can

What is the general opinion of skylake, is it something that looks like it would be worth waiting for or would getting something like a 5820k be a considered a good purchase at this time considering that there are two new line cpu lineups coming out for intel - broadwell & skylake
