I do these all the time! They're really popular.

Drop the Z97 and get an i5 4590 with an H81i  for cheaper and overclock the 4590 to 3.6GHz on stock cooling for free. (PM Me if you need help with this). Drop the R9 280 for a GTX 960 in my opinion as the heat in the smaller space makes a difference and in my personal opinion I would go with the Raven RVZ01 since it has great airflow and is SO much fun to build it. It also allows you to have an amazing side view of the graphics card laying down which is very nice while also being in gaming console small form factor.

If you really want a Z97 then spend the extra money to get a 4690k; the increase in performance for the money is very worth it.

Also generally the EVGA 500w PSU are a little bit cheaper and are my preference over the Corsair as I've had to accept RMA for way too many Corsair that have coil whined after just a few months.

I mostly agree. Though I had the exact same case with a 290 Tri-X in it, still was fine with temperatures. The 250D is actually pretty good when it comes to airflow.

So if OP likes the 280 better, good. 960 also great.

It will surely work. But the 280 gets very hot compared to the 960 and as their performance and price is more or less the same (at least here) it's better to go with the one that's quieter for most. Personal preference though, the 280 will work just fine.

What about changing the cpu to a 4130T?

Well I had the MSI 280 before my 290 and that thing was very! quiet in the 250D.

Also what I like about the 280 is the amount of VRAM. But you would be fine with the 960 as well.

Well, it would be $66 cheaper if you didn't buy exclusively from Scorptec.

No point in getting a Z97 board with a i5-4460 since it doesn't really overclock, changed you to an AsRock H97 board with AC WIFI

Changed your case to something cheaper (cases are personal preference though, so up to you).

Also switched you to a cheaper SSD, still quality mfg though

With these changes you could either bump up to an R9 290(I would do this personally):

or buy a monitor and keep the R9 280(about the same price as original build):

Don't forget that the RVZ01 only takes SFX PSUs.
