So, my mom keeps getting this error message on her work PC.

tx4ole14

Insufficient memory.

(1-1004)

I don't know how she could be running out of memory, she has 8 gigs of it, and according to task manager she isn't using anywhere near that. She does real estate appraisals on it, so nothing too intense. I honestl have no idea what could be causing this, as the memory is rock solid as far as I know. Also, nothing apparently happens, she just gets the error message. I am able to replicate the message, by simply switching from her appraisal software, to chrome, and back to the software. I did this multiple times with performance monitor open, and it showed no change in memory usage.

Any thoughts?

Faulty RAM? I've had 2 of my 512MB SDRAM sticks throw the same error in Windows.

Wouldn't that be overkill? I thought memtest86 will eventually throw errors if run long enough.

I don't see how. It's the same RAM I used in this PC before I got my HyperX fury modules. They were always rock solid. ADATA 2x4 1600

try the ram in different slots, give it a good blow to try and remove dust, if not i think maybe your ram has died

I'd run it for 1 or 2 passes with all tests selected. http://www.memtest86.com/

I've known errors only start occurring after 6+ passes, so it might be the case of you won't see any if you ran say 2 passes but would if you ran 3... It's good practice to let it run for at least 3 passes if you know why the error is occurring or what's causing it, or 8+ passes if you have no idea.

Odd, you're saying that it happens like clockwork every time you open her appraisal software, switch to chrome, then back again? Could it be the software she's using is buggy? Maybe it's written for 32bit and is running out of addressable memory? I don't think it's the same, but I remember on Windows XP, applications could only utilise 2GB of RAM in a single instance and when they hit that ceiling they would sometimes crash or throw out errors, maybe the same thing is happening here, the software is running out of RAM it can address and is crashing despite not actually using the full amount of RAM the computer has.

It's a long shot I know, but it might be worth checking how much RAM the appraisal software is using just before the crash, you might find your answer there. But at the same time I would run MemTest and just see what it's doing, I had RAM fail that had run for about 2 years rock solid, so don't discount failed RAM until you've tested it.

I'll try that now actually.

I've got a mem stick with memtest on it. little did I know that would permanently take up almost all of the storage on it lol

I'll let it run for a few hours.

What I don't get, is why nothing actually happens. Whatever it is she's trying to do, still happens, she just gets that weird error message. It's essentially "a problem happened! although it didn't actually do anything....so it's not really a problem" ?

I'd considered that, but it doesn't actually crash the software. The memory error just pops up, and we click X, and everything continues running like normal.

Sounds like a buggy program definitely, I'd see if there's an updated version available to use that has bug fixes, although if it's anything like most custom software, it was written when Jesus had his first computer and hasn't been updated since the middle ages.

I hate to say it, but I think it's just one of those things that you simply will  have to just deal with and there's nothing you can do about it, but definitely test the RAM, you never know, it may turn out that it has failed and that it's only when that particular software uses the bad portion that the issue is found.
