I have a MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G

My gpu z :http://gpuz.techpowerup.com/15/05/12/mw.png

I ran Valley For a while and saw that it  went black screen and came back on.

This also happened in some games like AC unity,Crysis 3 where the game would just freeze for like a minute or two and come back on.

I have everything at stock settings.

What could be the problem?

Is the elpida mem bad?

Should i change it?

do you have the latest drivers? if you do try reinstalling them

Sounds like the driver is crashing and restarting.

If you didn't overclock the card however, there must be another cause. That could be anything, maybe someone else ahs a better guess, but it's almost certainly driver crashings.

I am gonna get back to you guys after re-installing the previous driver to see if there is any diffrenece, but i want to know about the elpida memory.

Is it bad?

It might be a bad factory over clock. See if it fixes the issue if you de clock you card.

If that's the case, RMA the card.

But what do you think of the mem?

Is elpida bad?

I got Elpida on my MSI 970 gaming 4g, and got +360 on mem clock. It's not as good as Samsung, but a little better than Hynix. So it's not bad really, but it's not as good as Samsung memory.

Do you get any random freeze during gameplay or running benchmarks?

When OC-ing i got the regular 30s - 1 min freezes from the driver crashing of course, but that's it. Nothing in games once I dialed it back and found a stable OC. It seems to be the driver crashing in your case. I'm a bit confused since you haven't overclocked anything though. Just to humor everyone, maybe hit "reset to defaults" in your overclocking utility of choice?

Try using DDU to uninstall your drivers in safe mode, restarting, re-downloading and re-installing drivers, and restarting if you're going to re-install drivers.

lol i have reset all the settings from afterburner and which driver version are you using?

Btw what is your stable oc settings?

TIA

If your GPU runs at stock speeds it shouldn't be a problem with memory or anything. Sounds like a crashing driver or a overheating GPU.

My overclocks are stable at +140 core and +480 memory (elpida).

As i see that we have the same GPU,how do you know its a driver crash?(im a noob at this)

Has the elpida vram any effect on the GPU performance?

Oh OK. I should be using the latest version, and let geforce experience keep it up to date. Can't check now though.

I'm not home now, but IIRC it's +185 on core and +360 on mem (elpida). I keep hitting the power limit though with that.

You can really just max out the power limit slider and even voltage slider in afterburner and just go from there. It's impossible to kill the card with the limits on it the voltage and power limit. OFC it's a better idea to just push up the voltage as needed.

Not any more than vram would have. The only real problem would be not getting as high of an OC as Samsung's, but that's not technically a problem.

I found a post on the memory though. http://www.overclock.net/t/1457836/determine-hynix-elpida-memory-on-290x-cards-based-on-product-number-before-buying-them-confirmation-needed-please-help-if-you-have-a-290x The fellow writing this post seems to have a lower hash rate when using Elpida memory when comparing 2 of his cards, but that shouldn't have any effect on the crashing/freezing you're seeing. It's also just one guy testing on 2 random 290Xs. Without testing more cards (not to mention testing Nvidia cards), you can't really draw any conclusions other than that he had one bad card and one good one.

There is nothing wrong with Elpida VRAM. Maybe try to uninstall your drivers with DDU and then installing them again.

But many people say that  the Elpida VRAM is the worst and has the black screen issue.

I re-installed my drivers but have seen games not responding.

I am using driver 350.12

It's nonsense, it itsn't the best but it works fine, only overclocking is a little worse on it.

EDIT: 2 of the cards I had used Elpida memory and never had a problem, not even while overclocking.

Huh.... I get +360 on my Elpida, it seems to be better than what most got on their Hynix on the 970 thread.

I get the feeling it's a GPU issue, and you'll have to RMA. Or it's what @VortexS says, and it's overheating. What temps are you getting?

Is it possible to borrow a GPU from someone you know just to test and make sure it's just a GPU problem?

As i see that we have the same GPU,how do you know its a driver crash?(im a noob at this)

A game freezing for awhile is usually what a driver crash looks like.

I used the custom fan profile in MSI afterburner and using Kombustor highest temp was 73.This is a stock settings.

And should i stop using Furmark or Kombustor?I heard they can damage my card.Is it true?
