Would I be better going with a 970 or 290x? I will using for gaming (not very much) and light workstation use. where will I see performance benefits with each card? And which one would you recommend?

Thank you!

Some more info would be appreciated.

What resolution will you be playing at?

What do you mean with light workstation use?

Generally, the GTX 970 performs better at 1080p, but the R9 290X performs better at 1440p+.

The GTX 970 also runs a bit cooler and I think it runs quieter too, but I think that depends on which one

I will be using a 1080p monitor I will be going for a silence optimized build as well.

GTX 970 probably, because it performs better at that res.

It is also a bit more silent..

Not sure about the workstation usage, @NonaHexa seems to think you are better off with a 290X for that

I think the 290x is better, because it's literally the only one of the two you can use in the Adobe Suite, or Vegas Pro, or Blender. (From personal experience.)
