Windows XP and activation

I was thinking about putting XP Pro SP3 on my Dell that would never go on the internet, so I wouldn't be able to activate it. Does It actually need activated or do I do the phone activation, or what?

I've never done phone activation before.

XP just had a key that unlocks it without needing to connect to the internet. You can also use that key as many times as you like afaik.

I never had to activate XP? I just put the key in during install and it worked, nothing ever came up about activation internet or not. I even killed my SP1 disk that came with my computer in 2004 and downloaded a SP2 one and same thing, my key just worked.

Just a little tale, as I remember, you could use a day-one key on a SP3 disk and it would still work perfectly fine since it was just a service pack.

If its not being connected to the internet and updated it should be fine. Should.

I honestly can't remember. For once, it's actually been a while since I've installed XP. I know on my POSReady install on a different computer the activation thing popped up...

OEM copies can usually be reactivated over the internet after 90 days with no need to call in. 

 

Without internet, you will need to call in to activate. 

 

And finally, if you don't mind ever going on the internet - I have a couple windows xp machines that have never been activated that are still running fine and not needing activation for over a year. Not sure if that's my copy that does that.

Maybe give it a spin in virtualbox, just to be sure.

Might as well give it a shot. Having some small issues in 2000.
