Upgrade fx8320 to?

Go to solution Solved by manikyath,

this'll be a pretty decent server to toss linux on, and put in a corner somewhere to forget about.

from my testing, the G3250 should be capable of running a minecraft server for ~30 people without even having a hiccup,

or even running two at once, two cores -> two servers that dont interfere on each other's performance.

Hey guys, just a question. my sibling wants me to build them a pc at some point so i thought maybe id upgrade a bit. my question is what do you all think about a dual Xeon x5650 pc, Id use this for a mix of gaming, video editing and hosting servers for me and my friends(mostly minecraft). I know the xeon has to have 1333 ram if im correct? currently my system is on 16gb of 1333 anyhow so that wouldnt be a problem. What do you all reccomend and whats a good motherboard for this dual xeon build? also how should i cool them, If I give up my 8320 i will give the CM seidon 120 up also, would dual hyper 212 evo's be good? let me know what you all think.

Thanks,

Oxygen

dual socket are super expensive, you can run memory speeds of 2000mhz+.  a 5820K wouldn't perform much worst and might even work out cheaper.

Sounds like quite the power house you want but do those cpu's really cost 500+? You could build two systems with a 5820k in them and save money and use one as your server. Not only save money but they would be a lot faster with some OC.

i want to mention a few things:

- i doubt dual xeon is very cost effective in this use case.

- hosting servers on the same pc as you're playing the games isnt a very good idea.

it might be a better idea to build yourself an i5 or i7 system, and making a second, pentium-based system as a server, that can be controlled over the network.

^ this may end up a tad more expensive, but has a lot of advantages, like the abilty of having network storage, disattached from your own system, and above all, it'll be a learning experience of building a server, and installing (and using) management software. (also: linux might be in place here)

i can get 2 xeon's for 140ish on ebay. can you recommend a dual cpu board that supports the 5650's?

A single 1231v3 xeon would be more than enough, from your purpose of using this PC you will have absolutely 0 use of a 2nd xeon.

that single cpu is way more expensive than i would like to spend, on newegg thats about 250ish, Id like to spend 250ish on a pair plus mobo.

im looking at 5650's on ebay and a pair goes for near 140 USD.. thats waay less than a 5820k, which i would need to buy an expensive x99 board to go with.

I see what you mean but Im on a tight budget, I dont see how cpu power would be a problem by hosting on the same machine?

Still overall cost of motherboard + CPUs is WAY much more than a 1230v3 and an h97 motherboard.

dual socket motherboards tend to cost over a grand.

to be honest, i think if you're on a budget a dual xeon machine is counter-productive.

i'll make you a pair of pcpartpicker lists, one with the gaming rig cpu, mobo and cooler, and one with a server mobo and cooler (low power cpu doesnt really require a large cooler)

thanks, would I be safe buying something like a HP z800 workstation mobo though? Ive looked around on ebay and I can get dual cpu's for 150 give or take 10 and an HP z800 dual cpu lga 1366 for under 100 bucks. so 240 thats 240 right there?

this would be a pretty decent upgrade for a gaming/editing rig, still cheaper than the dual-cpu mobo's on PCPP

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($241.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock H97M Anniversary Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($61.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $303.97
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Even cheaper.

i was actually planning to get a pentium G3250 based server myself, but sadly in europe things are quite a bit more expensive.

the thing about the G3250 that shouts home server is that its the single core pefromance of haswell refresh, packed in a low-power, cheap processor.

They cost like £70 each here in the UK :P
