"Normal" CPU temperature range?

sup guys,

i know this is a pretty general question.  But whats considered a normal, safe temperature range for cpu?

ive got a brand new pc with a 4690k inside.  Not overclocking.

last time i checked i think i was at 45 degrees celsius

45 is really low, unless you mean idle temperature -- how hot it is when you aren't doing anything strenuous. A safe temperature for your CPU would be around 75, 80 tops. Normal idle temps can be anywhere from 30-40 degrees, depending on your cooler, the ambient temperature of your room, and how much other heat exhaust is present in your case.

is what situation was it at 45 degrees?

If idle, that's bad

If under load, thats OK

If under FULL load (like stress test) that's terrific

Non-Overclocked, with the stock Intel cooler, and ambient temps under 25C: ~30°C idle - 72.72°C load

If you go above 72.72°C with the stock cooler and stock voltage you can give good ol' Intel a call for an RMA, as that is the Tmax they warranty the 4690k at on the stock cooler in bone stock conditions (Blasting it with Prime95 or synthetic benchmarks does not count as "normal operation conditions").

Please don't use the stock cooler, and OC the piss out of that thing :D

i think the 45 degrees was after about an hour or so of dota2.  i'll check to see what my idle temps are.  i've got a cooler master vortex plus, cheap heatsink but i think its doing ok.  just wanted to hear from you guys with more experience than i.
