Hello,

As I mentioned in the Thread title, I just faced the following BSOD:

DSC_0032.JPG

A couple of days ago, I bought a Maximus VII Hero and a 4790k processor. I experienced the above BSOD, while I was navigating the internet waiting for ASUS Cloud Utility to be installed. Since the new parts were bought from a foreign country, I would like to cover all the possibilities before send them back (paying the courier and stay without a computer for a while)

Any ideas or suggestions on how can i check if it is a hardware or software failure? I could run a stress test on the cpu, but I don't think the warranty covers it.

Thank you in advance.

Edit: I formatted my SSD normally after the installation of the mobo/cpu

MOAR VOLTAGE

101 and 124 almost certainly tied to insufficient CPU core voltage. Assuming you haven't OC'd set the voltage to manual and give it ~1.2v to ensure stability at stock clocks.

101 is a voltage thing on sandy-haswell as @runit3 said.

have you overclocked with asus software or otherwise?

Well, it was a mistake in first place that I didn't mention my computer's specs, so here are the specifications of my system:

Intel i7 4790k

Maximus VII Hero

2x4GB Corsair Vengeance @1600

Gigabyte GTX760 OC windforce x3 (manufacturer note: 500W requirement)

Corsair CS750M

Samsung pro 128GB

Seagate 1TB @7200rpm

NZXT Phantom 820

About overclocking: Yes I did, just to check the ROG overclocking wizard, but since I'm still with the intel cooler it didn't do anything special (almost 4.2GHz) and it overclocked my RAM to 1600 (it was @1333 for some reason).

Edit: My previous cpu was the 2600 which by default needs more power  to operate.

If you really want to dig into the cause of the BSOD, you can look at the "Windows Event Viewer"

  • Event Viewer --> Windows Logs --> System
    • See if there are any "Error" or "Warning" listed around the time of the BSOD
  • Event Viewer --> Windows Logs --> Application
    • See if there are any "Error" or "Warning" listed around the time of the BSOD. Since you were installing something, an application may have caused the blue screen.

You can also go into the minidump folder, and have a look at the crash / dump file (don't need to take a picture of the BSOD itself -- it's all in the dump file)

Local Disk (typically C:) --> Windows --> Minidump

Another quick "skim" method is to use a software (i.e. 'WhoCrashed'), and let it read your crash / dump file(s) to see what MAY have caused the BSOD.

Since you have JUST put your system together, avoid overclocking -- to eliminate it as a cause for any issues.

You want to make sure ALL your components are problem-free, and everything is at least stable at stock.

1333MHz is the standard JEDEC "fail-safe" frequency for DDR3 RAM. On the ASUS Maximus VII Hero, just:

  1. Go to the "Extreme Tweaker" tab in the UEFI BIOS.
  2. Change the "Ai Overclock Tuner" setting to "XMP."
  3. An option should appear below it. Select "Profile #1" or whatever is applicable.
  4. Your Corsair RAM should now be running at the advertised 1600MHz speed, and proper labelled timings and voltage.

Be careful with the auto overclocking because it can actually give your cpu more volts than it actually needs. Dampening life span, producing higher temps, and of course using a little more electricity. Like the person above me said go back to stock settings and see if you get a BSOD...

Sorry for my late response but I had a good reason for it. My HDD is dead.

. I experienced the above BSOD, while I was waiting for the ASUS Cloud Utility to be installed

ASUS Cloud installation was in the HDD. Is there any chance that that was the problem after all?
