Help with HDDs for NAS

Go to solution Solved by Fulgrim,

Thanks for your reply, I don't know the links aren't working.

How long do you recon the drives will last, the warrenty is only three years.

That WD Red model you linked (WD20EFRX), has a MTBF of 1,000,000 hours. (mean time between fail) - it boasts power-on ratings of 8760 hours per year.

They should last a while mate.

Hello World,
I have a QNAP TS-409 pro NAS which I use for all of my data storage, recently one my Hard Disks failed so I decided to replace them.

I need roughly 4TB but the NAS can't handle disks more 2TB big and it doesn't support RAID 10

As far as I can work out I have three options:
1) 3* WD reds @ £75 each in RAID5
2) 4* Seagate Barracuda @ £50 each in RAID 6

3) 4* Seagate Barracuda @ £50 each in two sets of RAID 1

From what I gathered option two is the worst option but I'm not sure weather to get WD reds or Seagate Barracudas
I'm not overly fused about speed so long as I stream 1080p Films or TV via SMBA/DLNA (I doubt that the HDDs are the bottle necks but I thought it was worth mentioning) but I am very concerned about how long they will last, I'm hoping for at least 5 years.

Thanks for any help,

I'd pick WD red drives over Seagate Barracuda's for a NAS any day of the week.

They run slightly cooler, and produce little vibration.

Also, the links to those Seagate drives are borked.

@Randomrdp

I did the math. That's a MTBF of 114 years, and a power-on rating of 365 days a year (AKA, 24/7).

My Red drives are pushing around 3 years. I only have 5 drives though. They should last for a while. I would plan for a replacement around the 4 year mark for any drive though.
