Static is overhyped, touch your fridge before starting to work and you'll be fine. Putting plastic on carpet only increases static buildup afaik, a wooden slate would be better if you want to go that far.

OK so I live in a medium small house and pretty much ALL of our tables have carpet under them. The only space without carpet is the kitchen counter witch offers about a foot of table space from the wall so... Not ideal. The place where I want to work has very short carpet, will that be OK with a antistatic wrist strap? Or can I put some plastic (like for rolling chairs) down?

Your table having carpet under it won't make a huge difference.

 

If you want to be careful, don't drag your feet on the carpet or don't wear socks
