EVGA PSU

Go to solution Solved by Griffscavern,

I would prefer to stick with EVGA as I feel their prices are good at the 650W range, and they're apparently very good quality.

I really just want to know whether I should trade this one in and get a similar EVGA model or just keep this one and stop worrying about it.

Get the gs. I'll let jonnyguru explain it. Great PSU.

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story6&reid=424

I bought the EVGA SuperNova NEX650G the other week and fitted it to my system. Nothing wrong and it seems like a very good unit.

Today I found out that it's apparently not as good as I had originally thought.

If at all possible, should I consider returning it and getting an EVGA 650GS instead?

The GS is by far a much better unit then the G1, as the G1 has awful voltage regulation.

In that price range though also give the XFX XTR a look, basically the same thing as the EVGA GS for $10 cheaper.

Thanks for the help guys.

I'll look into returning my G1 and getting a GS instead. I'll also look into the XFX.

I would get the 750W G2, but 750W for my system is just too much, not to mention more expensive.

Or will it suffice until the need to upgrade?

What system are you running it with?

FX-6300 with a GTX 960.

I plan on upgrading to an i5-4690K and a GTX 970.

Should I go for an SLI config, I'll probably upgrade to a 750-850W PSU.

Even if you upgrade you'll be fine. Compared to other PSUs it may not be the best, but it will work fine for either of those systems. Even with 970sli.

This review on HardOCP said it was pretty good. http://www.hardocp.com/article/2014/05/16/evga_supernova_nex650g_650w_power_supply_review/9#.VUu99PlViko

Are HardOCP a good source? Or would it be better to listen to someone like Techpowerup?

Hardocp actually said in the bottom line that it was a "good enough" PSU. The efficiency of it didn't make the mark it should have for a gold rating. I haven't really seen much about this site, but it seems reliable. I'll have to look into it some more. Jonnyguru on the other hand is well known and very respected amongst any of the sites I frequent.

Why bring up the efficiency?

Why not? Its rated gold and a lot of newbies tend to look into that at first. Its advertised as a gold rated PSU, but doesnt meet that mark. I don't use the metal rating system when recommending a PSU, but if its going to claim it, it best meet that.

Where do you live? If it's the U.S. or somewhere that can order directly form newegg this PSU was brought up in another thread yesterday: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371083

It's an Antec HCP-750 (made by Delta) for $85.98 including shipping, after $30 rebate.

This PSU shits on anything else up to that wattage bracket at that price range and yes I'm a bit jealous.

Because it really doesn't matter. What's that going to relate to.. maybe a few dollars saved over the course of a few years? He asked if his PSU will work for his system and the answer is yes.

If you look above I already gave him suggestion. He also asked about that review site. Posted a link to the review about that "good enough" PSU. I was merely pointing to one if the flaws with that PSU as posted in that article he posted. So you can tell Me all you want. I was merely pointing to his specific question at that specific time. I still say get the gs version, if he can. In the long run it will be better than "good enough". I also wouldn't use " good enough" with my expensive equipment.

I can see that. You keep using the same "good enough" term as if it were a mediocre PSU. It's not. It's only drawbacks are that it fails to meet the efficiency level stated and that it's a bit noisy.

If he already has the PSU (which he does) there's no problem with keeping it. If he's willing to return it and go for a higher quality power supply, all the better.

I agree, but that PSU just barely passed on the 12v rail test too. Which is very important.

It's fine, it's just that it has awful voltage regulation, which can lead to slightly lower VRM lifespan on your components.

Uh, no. It is just a "good enough" PSU and is quite mediocre. 3.76% off on the 12V rail should not be acceptable for this price range. Gold efficiency rating and fully modular is purely marketing to get people to buy this PSU with subpar performance.

Anything over 3% on 12V especially on a unit with gold rating, full modularity, and a brand like EVGA is a fail for me, never mind a barely pass. And that's not even being picky, but rather function over form.
