Undersized PSU

Go to solution Solved by manikyath,

honestly, if the PSU doesnt smell like barbecue, you're fine.

Having built my first computer back in February, I had budget in mind, and decided to cut some corners when it came to the components. I got a tower, PSU and optical drive from a friend for free whilst I bought everything else new. I ran this setup for a number of months until I got myself a Corsair Carbide Spec-01 and EVGA SuperNova 650W G1, which I built the other day. My setup was/is driving an FX-6300 and Zotac GTX 960, so not super hungry components.

I just took out the PSU from my old case and had the shock of discovering that I've been running my system on a 350W PSU. And I overclocked on this thing! Albeit not much, but I had done.

Would there be any lasting effects of running a rather small PSU? Or would I have seen system crashing before any damage was sustained?

Your system would crash or slow itself down before anything happens to your components. Also 350 watts are enough for such a system, even tho it's a bit close.

Excellent!

My 650W should keep me quite happy now for the foreseeable future. Thanks for the help, guys. :)
