Hi The only memory I could find of the right size/capacity and speed (it has to be low profile) has a cas latency of 11. I was wanting to buy the G.Skill memory but they all have big fins on them. I was wondering if it would be ok to remove the fins and leave them like that. what do you think would that be fine?

Thank you!

The fins are only there to dissipate heat passively, to be honest they are not exactly needed (RAM can work completely bare without any shrouds as it is). Removing the fins would be okay.

RAM doesn't really need a heatsink at all, they can work bare. If you're just removing the fins, you'll be fine, but if you're removing the entire heatsink on them, then be very careful, or you may end up breaking the RAM if you're too rough with it.

Also careful as you might void its warranty. I am not sure though

I can confirm this. I bought g skill x series ram, and it was red. My build was black and blue and white. I used a hair dryer to heat up the thermal tape holding the ram to the heat spreaders, and prized them off. The black pcb of the ram looks great, and the ram works fine. Ram cooling is really only needed for ddr 1 and maybe 2. They are on there to look cool :D

DDR3 or DDR4?

G Skill has low profile DDR3 Memory, it's called "G Skill Ares" and is great RAM. Unsure on DDR4 options.

EDIT: They also make a low profile "Value" series DDR4 memory which is just a black PCB, but they sell ito nly in 16 or 32GB kits.

Lol I had "high" speed DDR 400 without heat spreaders/heatsinks

I'll be fine as long as you dont damage the hardware inside ... Also you will definitely void your warranty ...
