They will both give you the same performance, But if I was in your position I'd look at getting a used R9 290, you can usually get them for about that price

are they really the same performance??

Both of these card will have the SAME GPU core and the SAME amount of memory.

The only difference there is physically is the different Cooler design and possibly a different PCB design.

The performance between the two card will be minimal if any.

The 290 will give you more V-Ram and the card itself is more powerful then the GTX 960. Just keep in mind that the reference blower style card is quiet loud and the card overall is quiet hot so if anything, look for a card with an aftermarket cooler such as Gigabyte's Windforce, Asus DirectCU II, MSI Twin Frozr or Lightning, etc.

what other benefits does it have compared to a nivida card

More VRAM, better performance, cheaper card, easy to find a second one if you want to go Crossfire down the line. If I were you I'd go the AMD route on this one

I'm just saying, you'll get a LOT more performance for your money if you go the AMD route on this one. You don't HAVE to pick up another card if you don't need it. But it's just a nice thing to be able to find another one for fairly cheap, especially since the R9 300 series is just around the corner

The R9-290 is close (or just a hair below) to the GTX 970.

Difference between a GTX 970 and GTX 960 is pretty friggin' big.

My two cents.

Exactly.... The 960 vs 970 isn't even close. You'd be better off finding a used GTX 780ti.  Well....good luck.... It would be easier to just get the 290....or wait on the 390. Just to see what happens with prices.
