Do you know what pentium 4 that is? Some are 478 or 432, but some later ones are 775 which is needed for the e6600.

The core duo runs on socket LGA 775 and the pentium runs on PLGA 775. No idea what the P means

 eGPU Setup: Macbook Pro 13" 16GB DDR3 RAM, 512GB SSD, i5 3210M, GTX 980 eGPU

New PC: i7-4790k, Corsair H100iGTX, ASrock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer, 24GB Ram, 850 EVO 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, GTX 1080 Fractal Design R4, EVGA Supernova G2 650W

Hey, I'm real2end's techie friend who convinced him to build this pc.  I found out that it is an LGA 775 socket... but I sent him here to make sure a core 2 quad q6600 would work before he ordered it, also, what would be a good cooler for this?  Probably air cooling.

@real2end & @gurnben

It's seriously a bad idea to use a Dell board. There is very little support for them, especially in the realm of BIOS updates. If this board held a Prescott Pentium 4, then I seriously doubt it will handle a Q6600 or any decent Core2Duo even. If its limited to an 800MHz FSB then it will most certainly not work with anything past an E4700.

Get me some details on the motherboard (ie: what Dell model it came out of, what CPU it has in it, even a motherboard model number) and I'll dig up info for you.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

thanks! That's what I was worried about, I figured we would find someone really knowledgeable here! We will look into a the mobo specs, but most likely, we'll probably just wait and save until @real2end has enough for a Pentium g3258, a decent mobo, etc. That way, there are no worries!

That's a P4 521. 800MHz FSB. Guessing that setup is out of a... Optiplex GX520 or 620? Am I close?

That board won't run a Q6600. It predates them by about two years. Even if you could find a BIOS update to increase CPU compatibility the best you could probably get is maybe Pentium D's or possibly E4700s.

Not worth it.

the mainbaord tab in cpuz will tell you what the board make, model, chipset and bios revsion. you should then be able to find out which cpu's are compatible from searching on google and dells website :)
