I'm overclocking fx 6300 on a 970 msi gaming board. It reaches 4.2ghz and anything above won't run even 5 minute on prime95. What could be the problem because I see people reaching 4.5 with ease and some even 4.7.

What voltage are you running at? It could just be that your chip hadn't done well in the silicon lottery.

@valdyrgramr @Sankster just hit 4.5ghz. Prime 95 ran for 5 minute. changed set up of fan making it double fan for radiator and it works. But it makes nb and package temperature really high like 70+. Lacking air flow is the cause I think because after I do double fan on radiator there is left only one exaust fan. I stI'll have 2 space for fan. Gonna go buy the fan when free and try to run longer. At least proves that not unlucky silicon lottery I guess

@Aniallation just reached 4.5ghz Although haven run few hours test due to temperature issue caused by lack of fans. Having 2 intake at same place and 1 output sounds bad.

and ya, both cpu and motherboard is at 40 to 43 Celsius after test.

@valdyrgramr no bro, I barely able to move the radiator to front bottom. The front can mount 2 fans but not long radiator. Nzxt case have something there blocking.

But isnt that radiator only cool down cpu temp? If that so I think is pretty fine cause even at 4.5 my cpu is at 40 Celsius, just that tmpin 2 I suppose it is for the nb temp and package temp is a bit high.

@valdyrgramr one of the biggest problem about this is, it is totally a new build not even 2 weeks old. so I can only be sad and do nothing when people telling me the only solution is to get i5 a new board like 990fx or getting bigger chasiS. All are true good opinion and solution to my problems but just does not suit me for now For a guy can't even afford getting a better display.

Even if you bought a new motherboard and an FX9, that isn't going to fix the bottleneck.  If you want to get rid of the bottleneck as best as possible, an i5 is your solution.

I'm sorry you followed Linus' build guide.

@Faceman and i5 with a coresponding board will be in 3 years time I guess.

Not linus'ss fault too to be exact. Some other reviewers suggested that too.

Sell your FX6+mobo, you can probably get $100-$150. Then you need another $50-70 and you can afford a Z87-A($60) + i5-4440($165).

Who else recommended an FX6 + 970? That's such an unbalanced build.

Jason evangelion from forbes tech on his 750$ build.

Somehow in my country those prices have biggest difference.

and I feel like saving up maybe I go for 4590k with asrock extreme 6 straight away. That will be way better for gaming right?

Or I get pentium anniversary with a good board and wait until I'm rich enough to get 4690k.

Its just not a smart build.  "Tech "Gurus" should know better than recommending such an unbalanced system.

Yea, save up for the i5-4690k + Z97 motherboard of your choice, that will be your best bet for gaming.  I wouldn't go with the Pentium.

Listen carefully because this is going to be the most valuable information you're going to get.
I'm not trying to be cocky but I genuinely believe this.

You did not lose the silicon lottery and your board is plenty enough to take this chip to 4.7Ghz+.

Here's the deal, because I overclocked multiple FX chips before. When you ONLY change the CPU voltage it's NOT the ONLY voltage that changes.
CPU NB, HT link and other voltages also change with it as long as you keep them set to AUTO. This is what's causing your stability issues.

Reset the BIOS, go LOOK at the actual default voltages in the BIOS when they're set to auto. If it reads 1.2v you set it to 1.2v, if it reads 1.1v you set it to 1.1v. I'm referring to the CPU NB and HT link and SB (south bridge) voltages, check other voltages as well to see if they change when you overvolt the CPU. I can't remember all of them exactly. But I distinctly remember the southbridge being one of them and a major culprit in instability.

After you've MANUALLY set the voltages to their default settings, you can overvolt the CPU and overclock it. You can proceed to very SLIGHTLY increasing the voltages of the CPU NB, HT Link and so on to improve stability if need be. But your increases will not be nearly as high as what setting these to "auto" would do when you overvolt your CPU.

@BookerDeWitt I did. I followed a tutorial. Adjusted the nb and even frequency of some. Then put cpu voltage to auto at first, then increase bit by bit. Increase cpu ratio when stable, 1 core fail then increase voltage by 1 point, increase 3 point if it crashes. Now reaches 4.5 but nb and package temp is too high. Bought 2 np a14flx to increase air flow. Cpu and motherboard is at 40 Celsius even after running prime95. Just the nb temp way too high.

Would you kindly provide a screenshot of your BIOS ? you can do this by plugging in a USB storage device

For 4.5Ghz you should need no more than 1.425-1.45v

will screenshot as soon as I reaches home.
