Would two R9 290s (2way CF) be better than a single GTX 980?

Zach Is Kill

I was curious to see if running a 3 monitor 1920x1080 surround setup gets better performance on either a single 980 or 2 R9 290s.

2 290 is better then 1 980 performance wise but it will draw alot more power and output more heat they will also be louder. Also in game with poor or don't have xfire support it will be worse then a single 980.

2 290s will give you better performance on 3 1080p monitors than a single 980 hands down.  Though you'll be generating a lot more heat and drawing more electricity with the 2 290s.

Personally I'd prefer the single 980.

I'm going to be honest with you mate,

We don't know your intentions. I have no idea, what you really care about. Electricity costs, power draw, what's your PSU, is it an upgrade or a new PC...

Do your research first, look for what you need.

To answer your question though, Crossfire is obviously better performance wise.

i don't know if you are trolling or not but anyway an r9 290 CF will wipe the floor with the 980 but there is a catch the 290 CF will only be better if the game supports it if it don't then the second gpu will be gone to waste and it could ruin you experience but now for most games are fine now days so it won't be a problem but a single gpu is safer then two gpus CF

if i helped you and im right give me best answer ok  ;)

If you are at the price point of a 980 (around 600 dollars, give or take) I think its a nice moment to get a 295 X2, the saphire one is at 640 dollars on newegg and as long as you have a decent power supply (which you would need anyway with the 290s) and a 120mm rad mount, noise and heat shouldn't be a problem and you get a beast of a graph card.

Why would you 290s when the 300s are right around the corner? The 300s should be a better choice.

Go with the 290's.

At that kind of resolution, a single 290 is only a few frames behind a 980.

I would wait a month or 2 for a 390/x. We know its not a paper launch coming up because they were running oculus tech demos with 2 of them (I would assume 2) earlier this year. I mean, yes crossfire 290 destroys a single 980, but the total system power draw while gaming is going to sit between 300-600 watts in crossfire, depending on how demanding a game is. overclock the 290s and that number increases (in my experience) by about a half watt (up to a full watt) per Mhz in crossfire, which isn't horrible, but isn't amazing either.

Yes it's better. Most games worth caring about support crossfire and do very well. But seriously wait a month and see what amd unveils for its Fiji and zen lineup.
