I've currently got an average 24" 1080p 60hz tv.

When I use hdmi to hdmi i can't get it to fit on my screen and on my old pc the vga cable worked fine. (Now I've got a 970 which doesn't come with a vga slot) so I've got to go and get a new cable.

For picture quality which would be best:

VGA to HDMI

DVI to VGA ?

(Would I get the same problem of it not fitting on screen with a vga to hdmi?)

You need to disable overscan.

There is no such thing as HDMI to VGA without a signal converter. Either way, if there's VGA involved the quality will be no different than a VGA to VGA connection.

To get it to fit properly over HDMI you need to disable overscanning on the TV. Go into the TV's menu, look for "scan settings", and change it to "just scan" or "1:1".

There is no point in having a 970 in the first place if you're going to downscale to VGA since it only supports up to 720 dpi.

Play around with the HDMI settings, I see no reason that it shouldn't work fine

It was my understanding that VGA can only support resolutions of up to 720p - if there even was a HDMI to VGA adapter

Not at all. VGA supports 1080p just fine, and I'm quite certain it can do 2560x1440 as well.

You are incorrect. I've used VGA on a 1600x900 display and I believe it can go up to 2560x1600. But it can definitely support 1080p.

Well I feel silly, sorry for the misinformation.
