Still they don't look identical and not in every computer they face down.

oh I never knew that, new the the custom PC thing, you seem to know alot about this however and was wondering. Since the strix uses an 8 pin connector and the black uses an 8+6pin that leaves better headroom for overclocks on the black am I correct? Also it is said to have better temperatures while gaming though the idle is higher

I haven't seen any benchmarks from the Black yet. So I cannot say anything about temps.

That with the 8 + 6pin connector is correct. General speaking, the more juice you put into a GPU, the better overclocks you can get. But there are of course also other factors to consider.

When was the black release and why was it released when the strix exists. There must have been a reason right?

It was released in the beginning of march afaik.

I think there still a few fans out there that really like the card and the DirectCU design pretty much exists since the release of the GTX 570.

Also as you mentioned, it's probably easier to get a higher overclock on it.

Makes sense. The 570 and 580 both had much higher TDPs than anything Maxwell can throw at that cooler.

They look identical except the black has black heat pipes and says Direct CUII on the side

does the black have a backplate ?

It does not

then that card is useless to me compared to the strix. Sure it may be able to oc a bit more and get what 5 fps more ? But then you have to look at an ugly PCB. I'd rather have a backplate then have the chance to oc a couple more mhz

If I wanted a better card then the strix go for the matrix. It has black heat pipes backplate and the 6+8 pin power I don't see why the black edition exists

better overclocking than the strix at a cost of 10% more noise

ok sorry i didnt realise that they didnt make a gtx 970 matrix edition, but still why not just make the strix with the 8+6 pin in the first place ?
