Hey guys. Im looking for your input on what processor would be a decent upgrade from an i5 3330. I would like to be able to overclock so a k processor is a necessity. Im just having trouble justifying and measuring the performance boost i would get. The 3330 is a decent processor already for gaming and such but would it really be worth the money to get something like a 4690k or do you think the performance difference is too little to justify the money being spent on that particular upgrade? Would i have to go more towards the i7 range? Let me know what you guys think.

In most cases, the CPU does not matter that much when gaming - Generations nor Cores (to an extent). If you felt like upgrading, just go for the i5-4670k / i5-4690k (if its compatible with your mobo or you want to upgrade Mobo too). There isn't much reason to upgrade to an i7-4770k/i7-4790k.

IT depends on what your doing. If your mainly gaming go with the 4690k and overclock it. If your rendering and editing videos as well go with the i7 for hyperthreding. There really isnt a big fps incease from a i5 4690k to a i7 4790k

To OC your Motherboard must support it and going to anything that doesnt start with 3 is a different socket type so requires the same socket on the motherboard also.

CPU - i5 4670K || Motherboard - Asus Z87-C  || RAM - Crucial Ballistix Tactical Memory 8GB || GPU - ASUS GTX 970 Strix || Case - Corsair 330R || Storage - 1TB Seagate || PSU - Corsair CX750 || Displays - AOC 21.5 LED x2 || Cooling - Arctic F12 PWM (x2) Corsair 120+140mm || Keyboard - Corsair K70 MX Red || Mouse - Roccat Kova+ || Sound - Thermaltake TTe Shock Headset

Mh depends on the game like always.

You will see anything between no and and a very notable difference.

If you have some money to blow I will always rather recommend the i7, since it's higher binned and Hyperthreading is quite neat to have.

Some games already make use of more than 4 threads.

It will also always perform a little bit better than an i5 single thread-wise.

But if you want to save $100, the i5 will be a nice choice as well.

But if you do decide to upgrade I would rather see if you can get a used i5/i7 for cheap or wait for skylake, it's like only 3 months until release.

im also looking to future proof a little bit too and have it last a while before it becomes irrelevant. You think the 4690k will still be good for awhile?

The Core i5-2500k still keeps up with modern games (with a modern GPU). The 4690k will be relevant well into 2020.

If you can deal with waiting, just wait for broadwell/ skylake cpu's to upgrade to.

that was also another dilemma whether to wait for skylake or not

Basically you would need to upgrade your motherboard if you were going to get a processor which is not in the Ivy Bridge (3xxx) Range. To upgrade to a 4690k (Devils Canyon/Haswell) You will need to get a new mobo. Unless you can find a good 3570k / 3770k somewhere.
