So i have a weird dilemma and i can't make up my mind so i'd really appreciate some feedback.

I have two CPU's one is a 4670K and the other is a 4690K but for some reason the 4690K runs hotter than the 4670K. I made a post about it here and didn't get much replies so if you have any thoughts let me know - http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/350882-higher-temps-on-4690k-than-4670k/#entry4772018

Anyway with both CPU's clocked at 4.6Ghz at 1.240V the 4690K ran hotter by 8-10c under load but it also seems to require slightly less voltage when overclocking. Anyway which CPU would you rather keep? I haven't installed either in my system yet and i don't know why i can't make a decision. More than anything i'm just annoyed that the 4690K runs hotter than the 4670K.

Well the 4690K is supposed to run cooler but in your case I'd keep the 46700K since the temp difference is quite big. Performance is virtually identical.

the 4690K might be a bad chip

but typically the refresh have better power delivery and will OC a lot more

see what is the upper limit of both chips before selling one of them

Yea that's whats really bugging me. The 4690K runs hotter but i have no idea why... It would make more sense if the 4670K was a better chip and required less voltage but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Have you tried reseating the cooler? It could also be that the TIM on the 4690K is not applied correctly for some reason.

Yea i tested them both one night and after looking at the results i ended up coming back to it the next day and changed the thermal paste/reseatted the cooler etc and the results were the same. I thought MAYBE it was because i was just using the "Performance" setting on my Kraken X61 instead of setting a custom speed but that shouldn't have made much of a difference if any.

I thought about that afterwards so i went back and tested the stock heatsink at 3.5Ghz 1.000V on both chips and the 4690K seemed to run about 5c hotter.

@Luke

what about the max clocks of each CPU?

the 4690K should be able to hit higher clocks than the 4670K

I was failing to get either of them past 4.7Ghz on any reasonable voltage. I can't remember the exact numbers and i plan to go back to overclocking them but for me the absolute highest OC isn't really important for me as i'd be going with the lowest stable voltage for an overclock around 4.5Ghz for 24/7 use and the 4690K seemed to require about 0.025 volts less on average at any given overclock which you'd think would help with temps but apparently didn't.

lower voltage will be better over lower temps

temps can be kep in check with a good fan curve

if they can both do 4.5ghz, i'd keep the one that is doing it with less volts...and if they need the same amount, then i'd pick the one that run's cooler at those settings between them.

i hope my 4690k doesn't behave like that. i'll be finding out what limits i'll hit this weekend though.

ot: if the voltages were really close i'd keep the cooler chip, otherwise i'd probably take the lower voltage chip. its not like there was an ipc improvement or anything like that with the refresh.
