So me and my friend, had an idea we people could donate to get a sever for a game up and running. It would work some what like this. Theres a basic fee lets say for minecraft, or even Killing Floor (idk why) people donate / put money towards this until the goal is achieved. Once the goal is achieved there will be a forum setup on the services website that will take care of settings and stuffs like that. Then after a certain amount of days the server will go up. If people like the sever they can re donate (or Subscribe) to server to keep it up. if Not enough people put money towards it the server will be shutdown and money refunded some way.

Any ideas??

Does this sound like a cool idea??

ISP might not allow your connection to be used as a server

Bandwidth.

gaming servers dont use a lot of bandwidth unless you have hundreds of people playing 24/7 which I doubt op ever will...

Most ISPs don't allow private servers to be run on their connection.  Also home servers traditionally have terrible routing, so people joining in might have high latency.

I was thinking of giving credit back or something around that ball park. Also i still have to look into it.

Just make it all non-refundable. No reason to need to refund money.

They spent the money towards the server. you use it towards the server. If the server runs out of money...voila. Money is gone, and they got what they paid for. If they really desire it so much, they can keep paying for it. Server's are pretty cheap. If you have 10 people, you can easily pay for a 50 slot server if everyone skips coffee for one day every month....

And yeah, plenty cool. But it's nothing new, this is how most Clans run servers. So, it should work out fine, as long as you have enough donors.

I'm pretty sure the are no restrictions on what network traffic is going in and out of your house which makes it impossible for the ISP to block people connecting to your server

I see millions of people running servers from their home with no issues

Anything from games, to file servers, web servers, remote hosts, etc...

This is true,

But. You ARE breaking terms of use for most providers. Running any form of business on a residential plan is sometimes "bad", as well as running any servers, is generally a no-no.

Will you ever get in trouble? If you have 10 servers with 64 people on both causing network fluctuations and complaints from neighbors...maybe. In general, nope.

Again im sure people will still host their own servers. I'm doing it at this very moment. This is again for the people who have no idea how to do these things. Its for the people who don't have the gear. Ender for example a FTB server (depending on what mod-pack your looking at) takes up some computing power, and it only gets worst as you go on in the game. They might start looking at server that people have rules and stuff made of for them. My goal would be to let them come together, put the money together/ split it between them. then blame they have a sever in which they can pick what is going to happen and stuff like that.
