Not sure what you mean--can you rephrase the post?

Hi, sorry I lost interest

So linus is building his dual 18 core zeon build and i was wondering. Do you guys think i use it for folding@home or boinc and if so why?

i don't think cpus are the best at folding or boinc, never did boinc. You get a lot less from cpu compared to gpu. Some folding rigs have duel cores with top end gpus this will give you the best cost/performance for folding. I think they are using that for inhouse work.

Linus has got a dual 18 core zeon system for the new office. Do you think he should use it for folding@home when they are not in the office?

If Linus has invested in a pair of Xeon E5-2699 V3's then it must be for a reason and I doubt Folding is one of them.

Don't think so, Intel would give them top end xeon to abuse them like that.

Don't get me wrong I'm a folder myself but you shouldn't be folding on a 4500$ or so cpu.

why not ?

It's peaking at a 100% 24/7 then and you want to keep the chances of failure on such an expensive part as low as possible (or at least I would).

Also something like an 290 would probably be on par with those 2 xeons.

xeon are made to run like that or at least i thought they were.

AFAIK they are made with maximum reliability in mind, which is not to say 100% load.

i think you pay for quad 9s vs triples. They are clocked lower and i would think they built in a buffer where 100% isnt really the max threshold for the chip. I really don't know.

AFAIK they are made with maximum reliability in mind, which is not to say 100% load.

They are meant to be used by servers and render farms. There are instances where those farms spend days working on a single task, full load 24/7. It's pretty safe to fold with them on the idle times.

Ofc, that's assuming that there IS, in fact, idle time. That´s 1 machine for multiple people. If it does, however, I wonder if Linus would use it (they still cost electricity.....).
