My brother needs a new laptop this year for college. He (and me) always used windows, and never anything related to apple. Is going for a macbook still an option even though he never used OSx?

Also, is there an option go for windows on a macbook or is this not recommended at all? as I don't think he'll like iOS as he's grown up with windows like me. The reason i'm looking into macbooks is because of their quality, look and specs (not OSx).

I'm not sure whether I should be looking into macbooks or just stay on the look for windows laptops.

Also: if you have an apple laptop... do you really need to buy apple accessoires for your laptop, or is it competible with general/windows accessoires.

Macbook use OSx, not iOS.

All macbooks are very user fliendly (like all apple devices) and build quality & performance is way sharper, than any laptop running windows.

First off, it's OSX not iOS.  Running iOS on a laptop would be cool, but I digress.

They're fine though, and you can run Windows on them, but if he's going to use Windows there are some well built Windows machines that are price competitive. What was your budget?

If he wants to run apple budget is critical as i said. (I own a macbook pro top end model) I admitted dont like the budget options as much, but if he needs to run windows programs alot he might be better served with options like the xps 13. Please disclose budget and programs he needs to run(or at least coarse type)

Probably, but I couldn't find the right one...

Budget 1000-1500euro, specs i'd like to see: 256 or 500 gb ssd or 128gb + 1tb hdd, 8-16gb ram, strong CPU (i5 or i7), 14 or 15.6 inch screen.

CPU & Ram = everything, graphics don't matter (so no need for dedicated gpu). Basically finding the balance between powerful cpu & weight..

The new macs are crap from apple if you really want a good laptop look around with windows, a good one is the xps 13

CPU is too weak I think, also I dislike the fact that it only has an 11inch body... he'll typ on it a lot and 11inch body is quite small.

Remember that the resolution is weird but it comes out to a better 720p screen so yea kinda crapy for that price :/

Macbook Pro and Air are both good options then. I can't be bothered to search through european stores for similarly priced laptops, sorry.

I'm not, but I've used them enough to know my around and have developed for Mac before. Unless you need specific software, most stuff is easy to get on Mac, and most of it is available on the Mac App store, which is considerably easier than downloading on Windows. Installing and uninstalling software is also much easier (no registry!). But it does take getting used to, but once you do, it's still just an operating system that for most tasks is as (in)effective as Windows or Linux.

I recently bought a Macbook Air 11" for my first Macbook and personally I love it, it's portable, good battery life, keyboard is very nice(and back-lit) and personally I prefer using OSX over Windows. For me it just feels nicer to use, but this is very subjective. As for switching between Windows and OSX, I found it to be very easy, most things are slimier enough that you can guess your way through and for me I felt comfortable using it within a few hours. Personally I think the extra cost is worth it but this is all very subjective. If your sitting on the fence maybe try taking your brother to an Apple store and playing with a Mac for a little while.
