I am planning on building my first PC. I got a friend who is more experienced at building computers to make a basic list for me and I just wanted to run it by this forum to see what people suggested. My aim with this computer is to play modern games (by that I mean modern AAA titles) at a comfortable frame rate with as high settings as possible.

I won't list all the parts of my build, but here is a basic rundown of what I want to build:

  • Galax GeForce GTX 970 EX OC Black edition 4GB
  • Intel Core i5 4590
  • Kingston Hyper X Fury HX318C10FBK2/8 8GB (2x4GB) Black
  • Gigabyte GA-H97M-HD3 Motherboard

I have other things like monitor, case, fans, cpu cooler and power supply that I won't go into detail with unless somebody wants me to.

I don't plan to overclock to save some money on motherboard and cpu, but if somebody wants to suggest a cost effective way in which I can overclock, then by all means. I dont want to spend too much more money than this build already costs, but I would like some advice on how I can get the most out of my money.

Cheers!

On top of this, Your location & Budget would be handy too - chances are someone here might give a better parts list.

If you have totally no plans on OC, then stick to your current choice. Looks good. But if you do plan to OC, then maybe get the 4690K or something like that. Also, list your location and PSU. PSU is kind of important actually.

Okey doke. Here's the rest.

  • Corsair VS650 ATX Power Supply
  • CoolerMaster Hyper 212X CPU Cooler
  • Aerocool XPredator X3 Evil Black Case
  • TP-Link TL-WN881ND Wireless N PCI Express Adapter
  • ASUS DRW-24D3ST 24x DVD Writer
  • Seagate Barracuda 1TB ST1000DM003

I only want 1TB of memory because I don't fill a hard drive up that much at all, I still have the better part of 300GB left on my current 500GB hard drive.

If I want to overclock, do I only have to change the cpu? Some of my friends said that the motherboard I'm getting can't overclock. I just want to know because I might change my mind about overclocking once I am more informed about it.

Heavily consider OC, i bought my setup thinking I would OC all the time, barely do it. Another CPU to consider even though yours is higher is the i5 4460, its super highly rated at a Cost:performance Ratio. but other wise Its looking really solid.

that PSU is overkill for what you running. I've got a 650 in mine as I'm going for SLI.

Just advise after doing all my reasearch, The Corsairs are good, but you can prob get a antec (one of the TOP names in PSU's) with a higher rating for cheaper. I found mine with Gold+ instead of the Bronze+ I was going to get from Corsair.

food for thought.

Redstone:
i7-4770 / Z97 / GTX 980 / Corsair 16GB  / H90 / 400C / Antec EDGE / Neutron GTX240 / Intel 240Gb / WD 2TB / BenQ XL24

Obsidian:

MSI GE60 2PE i7-4700HQ / 860M / 12GB / WE 1TB / m.Sata 256gb/Elagto USB HD Capture Card

Razer Deathadder Chroma / Razer Blackwidow TE Chroma / Kingston Cloud2's / Sennheiser 429 / Logitech Z333
