I know there are always those, "best gaming computer" and "best system for $500" builds, but I want to suggest something different. A peasant average joe computer for as cheap as possible that should be able to run these things: social media, youtube, general web browsing, flash games, word processing, spreadsheets, skype, and printing.

No operating system needed(Theoretically it'll use Linux(Ubuntu)) and in doing so Libre Office will be used, so no Microsoft Office. A PCIE wireless adapter over $10 must be included. The power supply must be separate and have atleast a 80+ efficiency rating, as to not burn down this theoretical man's house.  No peripherals needed, lets assume the person already has one. Do not include a optical drive. The computer must be custom built. Please use PcPartPicker and post the links here.

Note: I'm not going to build this, it's a friendly competition

I'll list the user and their build who's build is the most plausible and cheapest below.

Current Winner:

All Hail Ertman For Best System for Use and Cost

<p>Wish I could have this already!! : http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qTLRjX

Does it need to be good (hardware quality), or just cheap.

I wouldn't buy it but techinically it should do everything required...

It may be sketchy, but should be able to do the requirements (social media, youtube, general web browsing, flash games, word processing, spreadsheets, skype, and printing). Edit had to change wireless adapter to meet the >$10 requirement.

That's expensive for what this is. I would definitely do this if this was a gaming build, but it really isn't.

updated my original post. That burn down the man's house thing was cause of me wasn't it.

If you try and shave some costs, still going with brand parts, aside from the case, you could build an i3 with a 260x and a 240gb ssd for 499.96 or so.

Hah! Just for fun.

I picked these parts thinking about my 60 year old parents and their computer usage habits (and with everything else I noticed when doing "home tech support").

Probably not the cheapest, but all parts picked are brands recognizable at where I live, and are not cheapo brands. Some justifications:

  • 2GB single channel ram, because that's all they ever need.
  • DVD burner, because they like to burn stuff out on dvd and hand it to other people
  • 500GB HDD, because they store all the photos and videos they ever captured.
  • I do not really need the network adapter since my parents uses a USB 3G modem, but since it's in the requirement...

Motherboard: MSI H81M-P33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($43.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: Kingston 2GB (1 x 2GB) DDR3-1333 Memory  ($14.69 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: SeaSonic 300W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($36.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-14 DVD/CD Writer  ($12.99 @ Newegg)
Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link TL-WN781ND 802.11b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter  ($14.17 @ Newegg)
