i tend to stick with asus (only for the fact that i've never had a problem with their motherboards) the z97-a is a great starting point to consider. its overclocking options are nice and simple. most settings are fine to leave at auto. i can't really say anything about other manufactures since i've only tried msi once and had a bad experience.

the sabertooth mark 2 is a good board as well, as a  couple extra features but he z97-a is pretty much the same board for a lower price.
