Windows 8.1 HDD wont wake from sleep/hybernation

Burusutazu

Whenever I open my Dell Insperon 13 7000 and wake it up, the hard drive usually does not try to spin up until I try to load a program.

This would be fine, but the hard drive becomes noticeably loud and will take upwards of 15 minutes (usually 4) to load something as simple as chrome, or my pictures. (pictures would crash multiple times instead of taking longer to load.)

Is this a problem with Windows 8.1 or the hard drive? The laptop is a month old and has done this since I got it, sometimes it wont do it though.

Well I had a Dell Laptop a few year'as ago.  After 3 weeks it would switch off after booting up, they never did find the problem, it had nothing to do with the OS as it was a hardware problem, best thing is to take it back to the place you got it from and get a replacement or your money back as its so new.

This is definitely something to try doing if you can't find a solution.

Is there anything showing up in task manager that shows a lot of HDD usage? I had noticed that a trial antivirus software was causing a laptop to be almost unusable for some reason.

I checked task manager and its the Service Host: Local System, when the disk wakes up, it ramps the hard disk to 100% then fluctuates from 98% to 50% for about 30 seconds then slowly goes down over time. My sister told me her laptop (Asus) has this problem also, so i'll assume its Windows for now. I plan on buying a ssd so I won't turn in its warrenty just yet.

Definitely don't use the warranty for this yet. Some of the responses on this microsoft thread show that some people have had success with a couple of the solutions. I would try some of them out if you don't have any success. Good luck!

run:

sfc /scannow

-finds irreparable corruption-

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/26f35def-6f55-4c07-9ba8-73e2d402e6cc/sfc-scannow-cannot-repair-member-file

Looks like they created a new tool just to fix this problem.

run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

-repaired all corrupted windows files-

run:

sfc /scannow

-no corrupt files found-

not sure if this fixed my problem though, ill report tomorrow.

It does seem like this was able to solve some of the problems, so I hope this also fixes yours too. Otherwise we will look for some more answers

This didn't solve the problem, disk usage is still ramped up at 99% and stays up there. I'll try option two when I get home.

Edit* The second option did nothing either, and my laptop is free from viruses. Although fixing the corrupt file seems to have improved performance overall once the disk stops being ramped up.

I did some more reading and some people have disabled things at start up. They say that it works, but it is not the best solution (I would try this last or not at all for now).

Another person suggests doing a hard drive check to see if the physical drive is damaged.

Others have said that One Drive could be causing the problem. You might want to try to disconnecting from your Microsoft account temporarily to see if that does anything.

Well fixing the corrupt file didn't fix my issue, however, it did make it happen less often. So I have that going for me xD

If getting a ssd or upgrading to Windows 10 (will probably get them around the same time) I will return the laptop for repairs.
